Dope clips from NBL National Breakin' League DVD!! - 11-03-2009, 04:35 PM

Dope footage of small clips from the NBL National Breakin' League DVD

Short clip from The NBL National Championship 2007-2008 DVD
(video has a NBA style commentary which imo adds to the quality)

so what did you guys think of the commentary thing? its just a for fun effect and the battle can be watched without it but yeah i thought it was cool.

Short clip from the BONUS DVD

the sportscasting is a distraction. b-boying speaks for itself more than words ever will. it's such an obvious fact yet the commercial route still persists in the minds of some. bring something new for goodness sakes. the editing and sound recording quality is poor and above all, for this to be taken seriously, it has to be in HD!!!

don't tell me what i'm already seeing, tell me what's going on in your head. i think these guys may even have watched the video or taken notes before saying their lines. the perspective has to be as original as a freestyle. i elaborate below:

in general, what makes a commentary special is the person conveying it. they must possess a unique vision for interpreting events. people have to be able to trust or at least respect such a person for his/her view. that takes time and effort, for sure. you can either be funny, possess raw skill, somehow show that you know your stuff, or a combination of traits. whatever it is, you have to be able to relate to people through your commentary. it's not like normal conversation. it's a broadcast to a niche community (b-people) and you are an MC. in all things hip-hop, there is so much room for character!

in terms of reproducing the event as it happened, battle footage itself is a very limited medium. the sound, atmosphere, and presence are all muted to some degree or another. therefore, i consider it imperative that the commentary be on the spot in real-time. at least then, we can be sure that the commentator was "there when it happened" and not watching it through the same camera lens as the viewers.

to be honest, the most critical element here is the MC. this may not be your traditional flow and go, 30x bar freestyler... but just the dude who knows how to make people smile and who catches all the little things. those little things make for a lot of enjoyable content in intense situations where viewers can't catch everything at once necessarily.

well the video is quite old as its from the 07-08 dvd so its about 2 years old and they couldnt get HD. but both the MC and Announcer in the actual battle were in the commentary with the addition of one other bboy from the league, all 3 being known and respected individuals in the league and in the local scene in which the battle was held.

thanks for commenting and giving feedback though. i just wanted to know of people's opinions because i actually thought it was pretty cool.

EDIT: i had no part in the making of this dvd lol i just thought it was interesting and wanted to see if i was the only one who thought this

meh pretty much what king said. dont like it. it is hard to listen to the music, watch the dancer and hear what the commentary is saying. for me i would rather watch the dancer with only the music, then be like WOAH what did he/she just do and rewind it to watch it again. someone telling me certain things affects other pleasures in my viewing. for example at 1:40 i knew exactly where the dancer was at but the announcers said hmm "not sure what he was going for", then they caught up; i really didn't need someone to tell me where he was going let alone after when i saw it, it is just confusing. it's not a bad idea but i just don't think in bboying it is helpful. bboying is learning to express through your own body and telling people what is happening through another person's body is just impossible.

true true definitely a different way to watch it. especially for non bboys, might be a good way to learn and appreciate certain things.
