1 step 2 step 6 step too many damn steps - 08-11-2008, 02:45 AM

Alright, im new to the forums but ive been breakin hardcore for about 10 years.

Now... i know the six step and i have kinda heard about 3 stepping, but i came on here and i read 2 step, 7 step, 12 step. now i gotta say, wtf are all these steps. I just refer to floor work and six steppin, and then individual moves that follow. Also, i have never had a "set six step." Meaning, the foot goes here and here then here six times. I do know the motions for a six step but have never found it important to keep to the original motion. I guess its a good foundation for beginners but where did all these names and steps come from?

I wanna know what you guys think. Is it important to stick to fundamentals? What are you thoughts on a free flowing style?

and wtf is a 7 step?

It's for teaching foundations and it looks good. Obviously being able to break away from them is when you get good, but incorporating them and variations on them look really tight. There's a video someone posted, but I can't remember the name of it, where it was someone showing all of the steps in a row, and had it subtitled to tell you what was what.

Personally, I think it's good to know. No matter how long you've been breaking always always work on the fundamentals.

If you've been breaking "hardcore" for 10 years you're supposed to already know all that shit.

no. never heard of 7 and 12 till i came on here. It wasnt till i moved back to the bay from chico back in February did i find out there is terms for that side leg throwever when you six step. Me and my friends never called the indian style sitting (were the legs are up) lotus, we would hold both feet with one hand, freeze position with other, and open our hips wide, that was a lotus.

im just complaining about how things change as i get older. the younger generation takes what i had and makes it theirs. circle of life stuff.

simply a matter in difference of origin

however, the general opinion of many foundational footwork moves is as you find on this site. (6-step, 7-step, 12-step, etc.) note: many moves have different names...

I bboy to discover and extend my physical abilities, to better understand the correlation of music and dance, and to further personalize the culture of bboying. What do you bboy for?

Hip Hop is a revolution of artistic standards. A revolution of music from beat-making, dance from bboying, poetic knowledge from freestyling, drawn/sprayed art from graffiti. Who're still aiming to revolutionize? Or are these simply standards of a newer genre nowadays?

the name lotus came from the Yoga 'move' lotus. it's the same indian sitting style with your legs crossed over one another.

and from my experience, each scene has it's own name for everything. alot of moves have a few different names, but mean the same thing. like baby mills, munch mills, corkscrews. i've heard all those names from people, but they were refering to the same name

It's important to have the fundamentals. You don't have to learn these steps, but the 12 step is fairly easy. It's pretty much the same thing with toprock, freezes and power. It's recommended that you learn the fundamentals before you go on to variations and other moves. I think 4 step, 5 step, 7-11 steps are variations to 3, 6 and 12 step just like supermans, babymills and tomstones are to windmills. You might of seen these steps, but probably never knew what they were called iono.

A majority of these names have been around for decades now...including six-step. Spy from Crazy Commandos crew in New York is responsible for the names of a lot of them since he invented half of them.

12-Step was a name used by Bug eyed bandit but I learned it as Baby Love (From B-girl Baby Love who did the move in Beat Street), and Storm calls the same thing Floor Salsa.

And it's not a case of "the younger generation taking what you had and making it theirs," A vast majority of these names predate you.

I don't think it's a case of something predating someone, it's just a case of learning in an environment where those terms weren't used. Although seriously...breaking for 10 years, you'd think you'd have some exposure to the various names for the moves :P

Anyways, I've heard like a dozen names for the 12-step (har har), I've got baby-steps/through-the-grapevine/etc.

Only comment I can really give you towards names is in breaking... move names are subjective.

As far as foundationally, in my opinion you should pick up each and every single 'foundational' technique you can find ANYWHERE... there are so many moves I've thought up that I wouldn't be doing now if I hadn't learned very specific foundational steps...
