ABDC and Bboying -
08-07-2008, 06:57 AM
Erg. Just need to get this off my chest. Ever since ABDC came back for season two, my old middle school has received a ton of breakdancers. Which really urks me because they all think their cool because they are just like Supreme Soul or Super Cr3w. Gah, and now their coming to my school. I see why some people regretted for bboying to be shown mainstream. >>

LOL, the invasion is coming. Just the MTV forums alone gets on my nerves, all these mofo's talk about bboyin as if they do it themselves. Most of those peeps don't even dance, and than they claim bboyin isn't a dance. I swear. sometimes I wanna get jerome from martin and just tell him to pimp slap all those cats.

I see what you mean, but I take a different angle on it. I come from a fairly small town with a small dancing community (breaking's even smaller) so I see it as all these kids who think they're hot stuff give me an opportunity to battle when I would normally not be able to. -Just my two cents

Don't let them get to you. Just know that us b-boys have the know already what's up in the breaking community. Knowledge is power. Do what you do and remember that your always a step ahead of the mainstream.

i'm not saying these kids are your responsibility, but you need to recognize when there's an opportunity to invest in the scene. thing is, they only know the mainstream performance tip when that's not what we are really about.
whichever way someone even thinks about breaking seriously, just know that it's a preparation for the cypher. however, they need direction so that they know the cypher is where it's at. you have to show people what b-boying is really about anywhere, anytime, and see who stands the test of battle (including yourself). in other words, if you see these kids, you call them out and smoke them on the spot. then of course, after the battle, you explain to them the difference between what they saw on TV and what's real. |

Wack heads will weed themselves out in time. There will be maybe a few out of those kids that end up taking it seriously. There are some kids like that at my old highschool and they all break together, but not all of them go to the jams and stuff. Only thing you can relaly do is just worry about yourself. And if you don't like them, then go battle then to get some sense into them.

Heres the way I see it. Everyone wanted to start bboying when they saw someone do it. Mostly people see it mainstream. I mean you were probaly one of those people that were like "I wanna bboy cause I saw a headspin or windmill" or something like that.
If they got inspired to bboy because of them whats wrong with that? Eventually most people will stop and others will continue to gain more wisdom about bboying and hip -hop. Everyone got inspired one way ro another. ( I think ) Anyways whats wrong with having more people to teach about the culture and the difference between breakdancing and bboying is? Or do you want to be the only bboy at your school? And if bboying was completly underground like so underground that it was forgotten. Alot of people wouldn't be breaking today. p.s. Im not really good at expressing myself with words, so i hope this makes some kind of sense. |

I have to agree with Dub-U ... the more bboys (or wanna be bboys) the more ppl i have to battle and hone my skills and where i come from that's a big deal ... my highschool has 200 kids so i need all i can get ... and it's also tru that most of them will give it up pretty quick! Breakin ain't easy, it breaks a lot more bodies than it wins battles ...

k1ng, i agree with you, as usual, that this is definitely a big opportunity for bboying. to all bboys: don't be an asshole to these kids. you're a step ahead of them, so you should let them know first of all that you're better than them-- if you're not a lot better than them and don't think they will listen to you, then you are not very well off and then it shouldn't be your responsibility. but for the heads that DO feel like they have a good understanding of this dance and what's going on, you should be teaching, educating. i'll say it again and again: knowledge is power. be the shepherd, guide the sheep. show them waddup, and let them know that you know more than them.. and once they get the hang of it, kick it up a notch and start being harder on them, start picking on them. they need competition to get their hearts into it. and i will say now to iggy: based on the vague-ness of your posts in this thread, i believe your understanding of bboying and what you saw on planet bboy is superficial. you can compare the exposure of bboying in the 80s with the movement that's happening right now, but you can't say the same thing is happening. what's happening right now is not that bboying is getting "mainstreamed" and "really ugly." that's a simplistic way of seeing things, associating mainstream with wackness. although that IS the usual correlation, 2008 is a year of change. and bboys are making progress. i sound like bboy obama talking like this. but check it. understand this: 2008 IS A HISTORICAL YEAR. WE, AS BBOYS, ARE LIVING HISTORY. PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO US. IT'S ON FUCKIN MTV, YO! THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE VOICE OF THE GENERATION. I NEVER THOUGHT IN A MILLION YEARS THAT I WOULD HEAR "IT'S JUST BEGUN" ON MTV. BUT IT'S DOPE AND ITS GOOD FOR THE SCENE. HIP HOP IS AN AMAZING AND POSITIVE CULTURE THAT AMERICAN HAS NOT FULLY RECOGNIZED YET, AND MOST OF YALL PROBABLY DON'T EVEN KNOW ENOUGH TO APPRECIATE IT FULLY. BBOYS AIN'T LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE. IT'S ALWAYS THE BBOYS THAT STAND UP WHEN SHIT GO DOWN. AND SHIT GOING DOWN RIGHT NOW. HIP HOP IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AT THIS POINT IN TIME BECAUSE THE AMERICAN ECONOMY IS FALLING INTO RECESSION AND PLAYING WITH THE IDEA OF DEPRESSION: -PRICES ARE RISING WHILE WAGES ARE STAGNANT; -SO PEOPLE ARE MAKING LESS AND ARE SPENDING LESS; -AS A RESULT BUSINESSES MAKE LESS PROFIT AND ARE GOING BANKRUPT, -SO PEOPLE (who work at bankrupting businesses) ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS; BANKS ARE UNRELIABLE AND YOU COULD LOSE YOUR MORTGAGE/HOME (and that's just the economy!!!). in sum: it's getting harder to live and it's gonna get harder to get food on your plate. these conditions are conducive to unrest, strife, poverty, etc. LUCKILY, unrest, strife, poverty, hunger and all that shit lends itself to hip hop. and hip hop is about overcoming that with peace, love, unity, knowledge, wisdom, understanding, positivity, knowledge, etc. (See: south bronx). if there's ONE thing this country needs right now, it's hip hop. it's more people being inspired by jabba and super cr3w and introducing themselves to this culture. it's more people understanding that life aint hunky dory no more. not in these times. that's what we need. not to mention... THE WEATHER IS UNPREDICTABLE, COUNTRIES HATE US, WE STILL IN IRAQ... needless to say, shit is going down in 2008. and when shit goes down, people need to step up. if you can't do it by yourself, do it with your community. the hip hop community, thanks to the ease of information access in our age and community-building websites such as bboyworld and bboy.org, IS HUGE NOW!!! CAN YOU DIGG ITTT!??!?!?! IT'S HUGE AND IT HAS EVOLVED AND COME A LONG WAY. IT'S JUST STARTING RIGHT NOW. the recession, i mean. people are just STARTING to get more strapped for money, can you feel me on this? some of us are in a different economic position than others, but unless you're running an oil corporation, it's all in a downward direction. people are getting broke, gettin restless, gettin hungry. i know i been eating less to save money, and i'm losing mad weight and energy, but that's life. i'm saying hip hop has evolved. people are doing beautiful things with it, making beautiful art, beautiful dances, taking things to new levels. it's getting legitimized with documentaries and academic endeavors as OLD SCHOOL CATS GROW OLDER AND WISER. y'all remember the harlem renaissance? it's time for the HIP HOP RENAISSANCE. you can say it's already started, but this movement is doing nothing but snowballing, picking up speed and momentum. you guys will see. you guys will be a part of it. modern day history in the making. final note: ABDC can be positive for the hip hop scene if you keep it right by contributing your own part, spreading the knowledge, stopping the ignorance. that's all i have to say for now -TN |
