Gymnastics?? -
06-06-2008, 03:27 PM
I was wonderin wether all good bboys when they were alot younger ever did gymnastics. Im 15 and have been bboying for around 5 months. Ive always wondered wether if I had done gymnastics at a young age then it would of helped alot. My sister does gymnastics and is 12 and when it comes to handstand moves shes far better than me, I know this is because shes been doing gymnastics since she was 6 but I cant help but wish I had done it to. So what do you think of gymnastics??

useful stuff. dont pass up an opportunity 2 learn if u can. it will help u with ur strength, flexibility, and handstand balance. not 2 mention the flips u'll learn.
and if ur upper body is strong a lot of moves will come easier. cus gymnasts are crazy strong. makes me wish i took it =/. |

i believe it's useful conditioning and training wise. I took Gymnastics a while back, for like a week (couldn't afford it haha) and that shit is fun as hell, it's literally a playground. not to mention the coaches are damn cool and know what they are talking about.

Then you can become a trickster.

Just be careful when you do it. Dont go up to a group of big black dudes in do-rags and Bulls jerseys and start C-walking unless you want to have more lead in you than a pencil. - 61!/V9

As a former gymnast with 10 years of experience, I can say it has it's pros and cons.
Pros: Flexibility Strength Balance Flips I've been breaking for about 4 months now, and some of my bboy friends are pissed that I'm picking up all kinds of power moves faster than they are. I can do front flips, back flips, side flips, wall flips, wall spins, and gainers. I can do a couple pretty advanced freezes like planches. My handstands are great. Gymnasics has had a lot of perks for learning to bboy, but pretty much only on the power side. Cons: Style is discouraged! Style is coming really hard for me. In gymnastics, everything is about form! All toes must be pointed. All legs must stay together. Arms have to be straight. Your whole body must be tight and you can't have a muscle out of line. Every time you break form, you lose points. THIS IS A TERRIBLE MENTALITY FOR BREAKING! Form is the opposite of style. I'm having to break down all the habits I learned before so that I don't look like a lego figure on the dance floor. It's a pain. |
