How far does your taste in hip hop music range? - 06-05-2008, 11:19 PM

Okay, this is something that's of interest to me because i like to think that when it comes to hip hop music i know my shit decently. However in recent weeks, i've found that there's a far huger volume of hip hop music and history, culture, as well as custom that i will never understand.

But sparing you the diatribe on diversity in hip hop, here's the simple question:

Is your taste in hip hop music far ranging and something you're always wanting to expand, or something that revolves around a certain sound, or a combination of these two?

For me, i seem to revolve around the more musical and experimental hip hop using a lot of instrumentality and also digital effects. As much as i want a dope beat behind my hip hop music, just as often i wanna hear lyrics i can relate to and shit that's real or at least interesting pumping into my ears.

At the moment i'm listening to J Dilla's The Shining, the track is So Far So Good. So beautiful and soulful.

Let me know how you interact with hip hop music.

Peace

I like things with more abstract sounds. I like it when people use interesting instruments or effects for their beats. However, I also heavily value lyrical content and depth. I'd rather listen to deep lyrics to no beat than bad lyrics to a sick beat.

I like any mc with TALENT, something that's really lacking this millenia. That's why I moved onto punk, I got sick of talentless commercial artists. Stuff like Public Enemy, Dead Prez, The Prunes and Ice T is still good though.

Yo man, Nujabes makes my bedtime songs. I can turn his shit on and listen to it all day, and it will always sound new to me.

I like to chill to jazzy hip hop alot. But in all hip hop I get pumped by a really nice break.

Hip-Hop head to the fullest yo..

Ferreal though. I just love Rap. Anything you can think of.. I like that super lyrical shit.. the crazy rhyme schemes because I can appreciate the skill and talent it takes to execute it.. that witty wordplay type with punchlines, metaphors, and similies.. that Native Tongues chill feel good type vibe (Tribe, De La, etc..) that raw shit from the 90s (Wu-Tang, Black Moon, etc..), instrumental dope type beats (Nujabes, RJD2, Dilla, etc..) abstract lyrics type.. story telling, deep, relatable (word?) music ('Pac..).

Anything that catches my ear.

Didnt get too deep into Hip Hop did ya?

I try to expand my horizons as much as can. When I first got into it, I was all about the hardcore stuff: JMT, La Coka Nostra, AOTP, Celph Titled, etc.

As time wore on, I began to get into more lyrical and abstract stuff: Monsta Island Czars, Helta Skelta, Royce da 5'9", so on and so forth.

At this point in time, Ill give anything a shot. It all depends on how Im feelin at the time I put the tracks on.

For the most part i look for emotion within music. So i kinda look for any type of artist that i feel puts that kinda shit out there. This does kinda mean i listen and look for alot of different stuff though. I often like story style songs when they're done well, punchline style tracks and often i like to hear overly technical rhyme styles.

Yo Alpha, Is Goodie Mob worth grabbing if i can get my hands on some? Like, i'm trying to abandon my prejudices and just appreciate music for music, but i still sorta have musical sensibilities and prefer funk and soul, as well as jazz influences in my hip hop. What would you recommend? I understand of course if you don't wanna reply but yeah, i figure a DJ is the best person to ask about this sorta shit.

Only got 2 of Nujabes albums but i gotta say, Modal Soul and Metaphorical Music have changed my entire headspace. I'm lifted right now and listening to Summer Gypsy, shit's awesome.

Peace

WHAAATTTTT!!!!! All this is dope. but whats real dope? FRENCH HIP-HOP. Check out rohff, and mc solaar. One tight song is la puissance, and another is inspecteur disiz. Oh, and eminem is dope too. Matches up to tupac in lyricist skillz.

It's hardly difficult for you to talk about gangster rapping but you never talk about the gangster government.
