I've been b-boying about 8 months, but my parents have no idea I b-boy..
I practice in my bedroom and living room (wooden floor FTW) and they're home most of the time, but they never see me because I usually stop when I'm doing when they come in my room.. I don't know why but my mind stops me from continuing practicing while they're watching me so they don't like freak out, like "OMG you can hurt yourself, stop that nonsense, blah blah blah." My parents don't really know what b-boying is. They think it's just spinning on your head and doing one handed handstands. I'm going to tell them but I don't know what to say. I just don't feel like it. It's not fear in my opinion, it's more like not caring to tell my parents my hobbies. Does anyone else have parents that don't know they b-boy? |

yeah i feel ya man lol.
my parents know i break and they've known since day 1 lmao mostly cause i used to take classes lmao... and i was in a big show breakin so yeah. i think you should break in front of them or just keep breakin' when they come into the room though lol. Then they'll ask you about it and if youve been doing it for 8 months or so, you should be going good enough for them not to say "oh this is pointless" cause in 8 months you can completely fall in love with the dance. just be prepared for the "this is a ghetto thing dont do it" and "dont hurt urself" things they will say. just let them find out on their own that you break lol. it should be fine lol |

My parents wouldn't want to sit for 2 hours and listen to me rant about what bboying is and what it means to me, so I just don't tell them. But they do know that I break.

My parents know I break. Been doing it for 4 years now.
My mom kinda gave up trying to stop me since I made dancing into my work. My dad accepts it for what it is and appreciates me having my own thing. Even saves me newspaper articles about dance every once in a while (which is pretty much every week.) |

Yeah, my parents know I break, even though they don't really like that I do it.
They catch me randomly bboying in isles when I'm working at their gas station, and we have like 32 cameras in the place, so I always go to the camera station and rewind to see if I did something dope. Haha they always yell at me for dancing at work tho. I go to put something back on the shelf, do a set while I'm walking there... haha do a freeze and a customer catches me while I'm holding it... Embarrased as I just walk away... |

a lot of b-boys keep a low profile on the break life to outsiders, including family. personally, i strongly disagree with this choice or attitude.
it's OK to be discrete but if you take b-boying seriously, how can you not share, at least eventually, your gifts with those around you above the underground? b-boying can be an avenue for you to change hearts and minds. this dance is empowering if you can fathom its depth. that wisdom comes with time though. b-boys are meant to be seen. you don't have to be a great speaker to just show people what you do (though, it would help the scene if you are a decent speaker). if you're doing it right, decent people WILL acknowledge you and your choice to be a b-boy later if not now. by "doing it right", i mean working your butt off for what's good and learning not only about b-boying but yourself. |
