APannone is right, it may be a pocket of gas just bursting in your synovial membrane but other causes may be degenerating cartilages between your knee and your femoral head, deformity of the knee cap or muscle tightness such as the tensor fasciae latae.
if there is pain, this is a bad sign and you should cnsult the doctor, but if there is no pain its not really a life and death situation, but it may be a sign of a degenerative knee joint pathology -- which is inevitable because constant flexion of the knee joint causes the cartilage to degenerate.
