hip hop dancing` - 05-22-2008, 09:21 PM

there's no straight up bboy crews around me, but there's a hip hop group. i dont know any traditional hiphop really, but they saw what i can do and said i'd be welcome to join anyway
what do u think? it would be a lot of work to get caught up with the rest of them and i've have less time to break. but i'd also get some good experience with different variety and also good general dance workouts. so is it worth my time?

Somewhere on this forum I read:
Quote:
Hip hop dancing is like organized biting.
I think he was commenting on the choreography bit. And I couldn't agree more.

Thats a quote from Vice President...
If I remember right he said somewhere else that he's learning hip hop dancing now...

Anyways, I'm not for or against the modern 'hip-hop' dance style... which I admit is pretty watered down from music videos and popular medias injection... but I find the idea of hating on any dance to only damage you... slowly closing your mind means eventually there will be no room left for you to grow, and you will stagnate...

Whats that mean? Many things, but it doesn't do shit to answer your question.. End of the day its up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide if you want to join up... why the hell are you asking us?

i think what he means is that when people do hip hop dancing, they get the choreography from others or youtube. so therefore, biters.

If you join, what they'll probably do is make you learn their moves and for performances they just make you do power and shit like that to impress the crowd.

They don't count? They're raw choreographers, right there. They choreograph their own stuff, last I checked.

A couple of my friends are crazy choreographers in just Hip Hop style, so no they don't bite anyone else's stuff and it's purely what comes out of their heads - which is creative shit. For the thread-starter I'd say just assess your priorities. If you want to get good at breakin' as productively and quickly as possible then naturally it'll do you good to put most of your focus on that, but Hip Hop style can aid your dancing a hundredfold and your toprock may even get a lot nicer.

If the choreography you're taught is challenging and most of all fun, then stick with it because it'll improve your general dancing. My first style was Hip Hop and when I started breaking toprock became my first love because I could rock it a lot easier than others who were starting out with me.

by the "organized biting" remark, i was referring to the load of kids who just take a class and don't know shit about hip hop or dancing and truly expressing themselves. they're just drones to the choreography and don't really do anything beyond that.

hip hop dancing can be done with its own flava and attitude, AND you can improvise with it, so there can definitely be a sense of rawness to it. you just have to know where to look. turn off the chris brown videos and watch the choreographers do their REAL work instead of the shit that they make for other artists' music videos.

as for learning it, it will only expand your vocabulary of dance. and trust me, you're gonna be around for a while, and you're going to want to learn more than one type of dance. and you can still do that while making bboying your main dance. it would be silly to deny yourself the knowledge of other dances. plus, since you're the only bboy in the hip hop group, you'll probably be the star or have some sick solo where you get to show off.

and if there's bboys watching, you'll get their attention and find your way to other bboy groups and shit. possibilities endless.
