heck no... you're not a poser. i've been breakin for 9 months. i started out with some guys that were formin a crew and already knew some stuff and they showed me stuff to work on. i kept workin at it, joined the crew and now i'm one of the top bboys in our crew. if you develop your own style and don't just bite some other guys, then you're not a poser. you should go do some breakin with the guys at your school and get them to help you out. if you keep showin that you want to learn and that you're gettin better, then they'll respect you more. you should start to learn faster and better that way too.

i personally dont like the idea of paying someone to teach you how to bboy because then your just trying to bboy like that one guy unless hes just teaching you the basics.
you said there are other bboys you know at school that dont take lessons. So why dont you ask them to help you out without having to pay them. you only take lessons if you have no hookups or know anyone who bboys. |

i'm with you... in a way.
i really don't think you should be payin this one guy to teach you if you've got bboys at your school. i was encouragin you to hook up with them cause you really shouldn't have to pay someone for lessons unless they don't know if you're goin to keep breakin. heck, if some random guy asked me to teach him to break i'd charge him, but if he kept at it for a while and wasn't in it just to learn a few tricks, then i'd start stop chargin him. if you've been at it for more than a month, then i don't think he should be chargin you anything. that's like against the whole spirit of bboyin. |

I pay for lessons and got most of the basics down. Formed a crew with those who are taking lessons too. Now, I'm on my own way. Developing my own style and practicing with crew members once a week. Hook up with other crew members where the one who taught me basics is in there. Let me make this simple, the one who I'm paying for lessons is already in a crew. He recruits those who are taking lessons from him, including me to form a new crew. Which means, he's in both crew. My crew and his other crew. Both of these crews, mine and his, hook up once a week for practice as well as other crews. Am supposed to stop taking lessons from him by now but the lessons was on saturday, which was the same day where my crew and I supposed to have sessions with his crew after the lessons. Thus, let not I consider to stop taking lessons from him. This is because I can hook up with the other crews right away after lessons without wasting time. Yeah, like MattRT said "idk how many times when iv been in my garage tryin 2 do some thing and thinking 2 myself. *god damnit i wish i had some1 here 2 help me*". Hope you guys get the point of what I'm trying to say. Haha. A bit offtopic though.

Definately not, taking lessons to get yourself started is legit, in fact, it would help you build a stronger foundation if you were to learn from a good bboy when you start bboying. The only thing is, when you stop taking lessons, you gotta work on developing your own style so you can expand your skills. Those guys calling you a poser are just fools, ignore them, work hard, and then the rest should take care of itself.

Lessons are good for the basics, but only just that. Take my case, when I first started bboying I took lessons to get the foundation moves. That's it. Now, I only take workshops from the more-popular people here, and from international visitors (Last 4 One, Yoshi, etc.)
My point is, as you get better, scale your lessons if you feel you need them. But only take lessons for the reason of widening your move vocabulary or learning something new. What you should do is take a notebook, and at the end of each lesson, think of at least five original ways to use the move in combination with what you know now, then think of another five, and use the best three. It might not so much be racism as seeing you as another poser who wants to "brakdanze lololol". I know I'm refusing to each a few guys in my school how to bboy 'cause all they wanna do is power power power freeze freeze. It's a waste of my time if I do that. What I'd do is talk to them man-to-man (Unless one of you ain't a man), and try to settle your differences. I mean, c'mon, at the end of the day, y'all are bboys. This isn't some Rock Steady <-> New York City Breakers beef right here. |

Some people are like slinkies. Utterly useless, but rather entertaining to watch when pushed down a flight of stairs.

yea. i agree with Death Jester. talk to them and let them know your reasons for wantin to break... don't just ask them to teach you. let them know that you don't want to do it just to learn flashy power stuff, but that you actually want to learn the dance. if they won't teach you, even when they know you're not one of those guys that want to show off, then IMO they're wrong... not you.

I had a teacher, he's in my crew.. He taught me for a year until I surpassed him and battled him and won.. Then he quit for a while...
