Angry Uniquely New Orleans - 05-19-2008, 05:30 PM

As a bboy who has only been dancing for about 6-7 months in a city that has an insanly small hip-hop scene and almost no real dancers, it has been pretty hard for me to learn. This is compounded by the fact that I refuse the use of "how to" videos, as they seem to contradict so much about what the bboy community is. Any fake prick with a "How to Breakdance" dvd and floor space in the living room can call hisself a bboy now. Screw that, I feel thats fake and can't respect it. So instead, I choose touse the beat of the city to fuel my progression. So maybe it will take me longer to get to the top, but whats more important is that I am creating a brand new style that reflects the music and attitude of the city I love, and is truelly uniquely New orleans.

i can respect that u really should be thought by an experienced bboy however not everyone has that luxury. back in the 80s when that attitude was developed there was bboys every where so its easier to find someone to help u.

to the kids who cant find someone what then? they cant learn to do something they love because thy live in the wrong city?

i thought my self off videos for my first 4 months cause i didnt know of my scene i
thought myself all foundational footwork airchairs and millz b4 i met my first older teacher

even thou i started off as what some might consider as an eboy i am now an active member of the florida scene attending all the jams in central and northen florida i havent taken a jam but ive made it to 2 finals.

so in my opinion theres nothing wrong with using the internet as long as u eventualy do get off of it and start going to jams and what not

about your own style im guessing since u wont use videos your learning from the bboys around u, even thou there from new Orleans there style isnt at this day and age with internet and dvds theyve bbeen influenced by bboys in other states even other countrys.

so if u are influenced by a bboy in new orleans your still taking in influence from every where else making your own composite of a style there is no such thing as city styles anymore.

so no matter what your gonna have outer city influence so by not watching vids your just limiting your self

i feel what your saying, but what do you do when you are one of five to ten bboys in the city? Make it up as you go.

trust me, I'm not hating on how you learnd your steps, I just have different feelings on where an individuals moves should comne from. Don't get me wrong... i don't hate cuz you learned from a video, just a offering a different perspective on creating your own style, thats all.

i have to disagree with you on that, there are most certainly very uniquely city styles. It doesn't take much to figure out where a bboy is from simply by the way they dance. Also, by staying away from instructional videos, i really feel like I'm making a better link between my dancing and the culture around me by staying away from too much (not all) outside influence. Though please don't take this as me saying that I am completly closed off to the influences and guidance of other, more experienced bboys, I just feel that it is more important, to me at least, to really find my own style. U know what I mean?

He stopped a long time ago.
Anyhow, there IS a REAL scene out there, even though it consists of 3 bboys, but they hit up BR a lot, which is the main gathering place for the bboys of Louisiana. If you're truely interested, hit me up.

damo this is probably the most mature convo ive ever witnessed on bboy.org keep doing what u do and dont let anyone tell u your wrong i have a really really hype style alot of older more prominent bboys on my scene have told me to calm down i respect them but thats my shit and ill continue to dance the way i wanna and i think u should 2 but hell just because no one in your city can do say halos (no one in my city has perfect halos) you shouldnt be stopped from learning them.

you can learn them off a vid and teahc them to everyone around u face to face the way it should be done

so basically face to face is perfered but if theres no way u can get what u want that way using a vid isnt wrong just my opinion what eva

i really cant imagine how it is to dance alone, even though i have a crew and i practice by myself sometimes. I would keep going, but i dont think id be as far as i am today.

i completely agree with you
expect for the how to part
i use them occasionally for difficult shit haha

but yeah
i hate people who just learn how to 3 step off a dvd or youtube video and go on myspace and change their name to BBoy Ultimate or some fake, lame shit like that
to be called a bboy at all, you've gotta gain the respect of others
and have some actual skill
most people watch a 6 step video, "breakdance" for a week then quit and they call themselves bboys

major props on this thread man

Its true Damo, I know what you're talking about. I'm from brisbane in Australian and the scene is tiny. The only battle that is on all year is in July and so far I've only met about 15-20 bboys, most of which are from the same crew. And the "how to" vids, that's understandable... I always thought the majority of em sucked and I never learnt anything from them.. its better learning from a mentor.
