What happened in your first battle? -
05-11-2008, 10:35 AM
Well, three days ago this guy named Andrew Kim at my school challenged me to a battle. He said he only knew baby freeze, so I decided, okay let's have a baby freeze-off. Then, after the music starts he tells me all the moves he can do. Suddenly he's as good as I thought he was before he said anything. The music starts and he immediately gets to the ground. Soon he pulling off windmills and whatnot. Then, as soon as I was about to step up, a teacher kicked us out. Next day. He says the last battle got screwed up and he wants a rematch. Knowing his skills now, I still said okay, 'cause battling seems like a good learning experience. So I started this time. I indian stepped at the beginning then did the behind the leg version (the name escapes me. back step?), pulled off some improv toprocking 'cause as of yet I don't know so much. Then I went to the ground and did a six-step and pulled off a nice baby freeze (tooting my own horn). He went up and did some more complicated (by my standards) moves, like one-handed hand stands. When he went for the windmill, he messed up and severely cut himself of the rug. Lots of blood showing on his forearm. Anyway, my next combo was shorter. Indian step, some charlie step and some improv stepping, then I did a handstand. When I fell over from the handstand, I pulled off a car, and just barely pulled off some coffee grinders. Then I went into another sick baby freeze with the legs in a different postition. Anyway, he came at me with a rehearsed routine next (which was, of course, not on the beat at all, but still cool) and smoked me. I got ROASTED the second time. Still, I don't really consider winning as important (at least, not until I get good!), so I think it ended in a loss for me, which I was OK with. What happened in your first battle? As in, like, who won, and what was it like? In DETAIL. Anyway, any comments on my story, or stories of your own, post here.
Peace out.

hmm
interesting story no doubt, but you gotta get into the scene more and understand breaking before you judge who won what, aiite? not tryna offend you or anything, but yeah. too often do beginners think that one power move = instant win. that's not the right attitude; that mentality will make you lose in actual battles
so keep breaking, dont think about who won/lost b/c nobody cares, just improve yourself

My first battle was at a jam... I told myself I was gonna win and nothing could beat me... in the end I was so nervous I fucked up to the max and I got roasted (I woulda gotten roasted anyway the guy was way better than I am still...)
Thats life, you'll suffer many crushing defeats before you savor the first taste of victory. Keep at it.

i lost my first battle to a beginner (i was about one year in at the time, he was about 6-7months in) jus cuz i got a really cruddy song (seriously, i can't dance to songs that are EXTREMELY slow) so i wasn't feelin it as much, and my rounds ended up bein really short as a result. the kid won both rounds cuz he was so excited about his first battle and all i cud think about was how crappy the music was.
thats where i finally learned that attitude, character, and energy go a long way, even if you aren't really feelin too much in the zone.

My first real battle (@ a Jam) was crazy. They called out my name so I go to the middle and get ready to battle. The other guy isn't showing up so I just start doing a set. CJ from Brickheadz is like, "WAIT!" so I stop and we wait a little more and the guy shows up. I throw down the first round and the other guy does his. I stand there like, well I lost. Judges... and I went on. I then won my next battle against some guy who was whipping out some mad power 'cuz he's been breaking probably 1-2 years longer than me. I ended up winning that because I wrecked the intro to Beats to the Rhyme and showed solid foundation. In the third battle I gave up because I had not planned to make it past the first round so I sucked. But it was definitely the best thing I've ever done.

dis foo was like straight hatin on me so i was like yo bish ima fuckin skoo u and busted out 6 flares to windmill headspin to neckspin to legs around neck flares. then i got raped by style
i never really had a battle battle. but me and my friend kinda did becase we started learning at the same time had a comptetition to see who could do what moves better. we had turtle freeze baby freeze handglide freeze for freezes and 6 step 4 step 7 step 12 step and 2 step. he crushed me in all the freezes but i murdered him in footwork. then i showed him this move i made up, then he showed me his windmills which he has good, he can normally get 2 good ones before slowing down.
and with the same guy we did kinda have a battle but it only was 1 set and he beat me. but it was fun. im sure itd be fn to face him again. were kinda like rivals

Yeah i have a question going along with this, there's a jam on Saturday which I'm going to, and I'm still a noob. Is that a bad idea? I don't wanna embarass myself or anything, but is that a good idea? do new bboys often go to your jams?

i say, youre a noob UNTIL you go to a jam. that's when your eyes open about the bboy scene in your area.
get down in a few cyphers, bboys are the last people to rip on you for crashing or being a noob.

My first real battle at a jam was about 4 months ago and the song that came on was Organ donor, so i go out first. And since it was an exhibition match to see who made it into the next group we were encouraged to have a longer set. So i make a long ass set and then the other guy starts dancing and about 4 secs later he gets the organ solo, haha.
