all copied moves. -

what are your thoughts on breakdancing now..and the 80's when it was big...in the 80's they didn't have youtube or the internet for tutorials..they had themselves and others trying to come up with something new.like elbow air flares and 1 handed air flares...now everything is copied..i rarly see some originality..in power moves i'm speaking of here...i mean style is always different because it's yours and how your feeling..but power is all copied...does anyone agree or think differently?

in the 80's they had the media.
power is more towards the techinical side of things. and i don't think the elbow airflares or airflares didn't get common until the late 90s..at least the continuous ones. People stole moves just as much back then. I mean you mean there were backspins, handglides, turtles, and windmills everywhere. Just the very few pioneers were able to take to the next level. Just like it is today...the majority doing the same stuff, then there's going to be that one person or group of ppl thats going to up the level and set a new standard |

In a way it's the same now as it was then since many big names still have their own trademarked individualized power... how many people do you know who hop 4ft everytime they mill like Crazy Monkey? How many people thread their flares like Lilou? How many do walking-airflares like Brahim? How many land their airflares into elbow-freezes like shorty? How many times have you seen someone go 2000-elbowtrack-hollowed 2000 like Ruen? Its up to the individuals to originalize and take it to the next level. Even when it comes to power its up to you to be generic or original.

this question is loaded with bad assumptions; consider this perspective.
bboys are not trying to reinvent the wheel. all we're trying to do is perfect it, sharpen it, shape it, and USE it. bboying is a medium, a means, and not an end. while our dance will become richer with new moves over time, an art form itself can't completely "change" without becoming something else. for example, painting is actually drawing except with a brush instead of a pencil. to a non-artist or know-nothing, you might think that it's just a subtle detail in the tool that you use but there are great consequences arising from this small difference that make painting and drawing totally separate disciplines in the arts. even within these disciplines, there are a multitude of styles and philosophies, all of which increase the diversity of expression. when the heads talk about bboying as being evolutionary in nature, they're talking about how it's being used, improved, and developed. they don't mean the dance itself is changing its foundations. this detail is important to realize so you can avoid confusing the definition and use of "evolve" with respect to breaking. |

well i'm talking moves wise here..not transitions to other moves...like yes threading flare is sick...but like..there's headspins and airflares..and obviously you can do them all in different ways..but i'm talking NEW moves...all the moves now are copied from the 80's..they started from scratch..they made the airflare...we copied the airflare.

Airflare was not in the 80s........ at least as far as I know. The majority of the powermoves in Bboying were taken from outside places. The Flare was, as was the windmill.

Well I'm guessing late 80s then. How was someone "third best" there's no real ranking system.
EDIT: After talking to Fatalz he's convinced me that windmills were developed by Bboys but I still think there was outside influence. |

According to mr.wiggles Crazy Legs is credited with the "continuous backspin" which was the first and most basic form of windmill.

Were windmills not invented by Crazy Legs back in the days?
I've heard that he called them continious backspins. Later they give it the name Windmill. Anyway, I think that you can't say that we're copying moves. Everyone has a different style and you'll see that style in powermoves too. There are much variations to learn moves, for expample an airflare/airtrack, but an airflare/airtrack is an airflare/airtrack. |
