so i was thinking about robot.funk's gymnastics video of him bboy'ing to crap like fergie and shit (haha)

so it made me wonder. what songs do you guys break to that you probably would never find at another session or a jam?

i like breakin to the song "i can't get no (satisfaction)" by rolling stones. it just has a dope beat =]

oh and "another one bites the dust" by queen

D.A.N.C.E by Justice, but pretty sure i'm not the only one who has danced to that song before.

i can dance to most things, but straight up bboying? it would be wack to force yourself to bboy to shit that just wasn't meant for bboying. you can break to it. you can dance to it. don't bboy to it.

i would actually recommend putting your entire playlist (yes, even your britney songs) on random and trying to dance to whatever song comes up. just straight up dance, it doesn't have to be bboying (although your experience and training in breaking will obviously influence your dancing), it doesn't even have to be dope. but just groove to the music.

dancing to anything isn't a problem. but i am asking about bboy'ing to other music. sort of like ur trailer i remember made with rob zombie dubbed over it. do you break to that song or was it just for the video?

I used to think that you could break to music that isn't a breakbeat... Obviously it IS possible, but depending on the tempo, or the amount of background percussion, the "flow" of the dance is a bit different. Sometimes, combos that you could normally do to a breakbeat song just feel so unnatural for a song that isn't breakbeat. Due to the fact that the dance is designed around that style of music, the pauses, and general footwork just meshes better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about being progressive so I think changing the music up is a great idea... You just have make sure you keep a balance between tradition and progession.

You can do your steps and shit to the songs but you can't really feel it or anything. At least I have. It just doesn't work.

lol that trailer was so wack
i just liked the song. it was fucking intense. and i never even listen to a lot of rob zombie. buttt yeah i could bboy to it. i wouldn't prefer to, but i suppose i could. honestly, i want to forget about that trailer completely LOL

i'm gonna change my previous answer, actually, cuz i came to another revelation.

so what constitutes a breakbeat? it should be anything you can get down to, not a genre of music. it doesn't just have to be funk. and just cuz it's funk doesn't mean you can get down to it. just like how hip hop doesn't discriminate race or religion or anything, breaks don't discriminate genre.
(ex. brooklyn is burning, hot music, organ donor, etc.)

if you're diggin a song that's not a break, but you can see how it CAN be a break, then just fuckin break to it! if you're providing music for the session, whether you're a DJ or just the guy with the ipod, bump that shit! maybe people will agree with you, and they'll rock that song too. all the sudden, it's a new break. how do you think new breaks get introduced? brooklyn is burning wasn't always a break, but then everyone loved that shit when it came out.

that's why we gotta pay respects to guys like DJ Leacy, who went out and dug for songs that you can bboy to, trying to expand the pre-existing scope of breaks. that's what break DJs SHOULD do. and just cuz you're not a DJ doesn't mean you shouldn't make the same effort. as a bboy, you should always keep an open ear.

so bboying to things other than [pre-existing] breaks? YES
but still, bboying to wack shit that you can't bboy to? NO

edit:
i've been feelin "i can't get next to you" by the temptations lately

One of my friends would change the song randomly to a slow song, then try dancing to it 0.o

I found through the years that you can really dance to anything if you want to. I remember when i was bored a couple times i through on classical music and believe it or not Marriage of Figaro is a great track to bboy to

However as for something to consistently bboy to that is not breakbeats? Well i would have to say certain styles of Jungle/DnB especially for doing fast clean footwork/groundwork..nothing better than Ragga Jungle BOHBOH!

But in a way thats cheating because DnB/Jungle CAME from Breakbeat-Hardcore...which inturn came from breakbeats.

And i have to disagree with that statement about forcing. You should never force yourself to dance to anything. You are looking at it in the wrong context when you do that. Instead think of it as a challenge...going into it with that state of mind you may be surprised..delightful at some songs you never thought you could bboy to.

Im not saying to try it to Culture Club or Yanni....but you get the idea
