Help With Dance Classes - 03-02-2008, 05:30 PM

So I just got employed to teach some hip hop classes and the only thing i know how to do it bboy. im teaching 6 girls and 1 guy. all the girls are pretty unenthusiastic about learning how to breakdance, but the guy is actually very enthusiastic. so for the rest of the class i taught how to chest pop and arm wave and some girly choreo i had to learn before. any tips on what to teach ?

Maybe you want to figure out what the girls are into.

To add onto that idea, you should ask them what they want to learn and what dancing goals they want to achieve.

Other than that, I dunno.

how much are these people paying to be taught?
bboying is a dance so teach them how to dance, not how to do the moves only. if they're really so unenthusiastic, a captive audience can only be won over if you give them a reason to care. i wonder if you showed them something and maybe they thought it was wack.

edit: my bad to anyone who read what i removed; i was thinking of someone else lol

ok so i was talking to them about expressing themselves cause if i taught them choreo itd be boring. but i guess they were more into choreo? the classes are $200 for 2 months and classes are once a week. so its like 10 classes. i get paid 30 bucks per class so $300 in total. and i basically showed them some toprock, footwork, and i got my friend to do some flares, backspins, a very long 1 h freeze, and etc. yeah i taght them some beginning basics to popping, waving, and gliding, they were pretty unenthusiastic too. im teahcing also like 13-17 year olds around my age.

If they're unenthusiastic it may be because they're not really seeing the value in it and don't respect you.

Firstly, make sure you've demonstrated your skills and portrayed it in a fun light. If they don't think it's fun, get some of your crew (or other bboys or something) to come along and show them a quick 5 minute battle for the last part of a class after your session.

Make sure the classes are run well, with a plan that can be changed up a bit if they really liked one move or wanted to go back to another one from last session. Just make sure that you're catering for their needs and their interests.

Peace

Look let's be honest here okay. I started/teach a dance club/class at my school and I had some pretty hard first hand experience with newbie dance students.

1. Choreography is way better of a teaching tool then trying to the teach the "concepts"
2. Teach in this order: raw choreo first, finer technique second, musicality third, history and background of the dance last.
3. Most people who take dance classes are only interested in experimenting and showing off what they learnt. So don't get to serious with the whole "poser hip hop crap" until later.
4. Bboying is a hard dance to start with. To be a teacher you've got to be flexible, especially hip hop. Learn some jazz, african, popping, c-walk, krumping, etc.
5. Majority of girls + breaking = large unenthusiam and uninterest (notice I said MAJORITY)
6 (and most importantly). Without the students there wouldn't be a teacher.

Well that's my experience with teaching so I hope it helps.

I don't think it's that they don't respect you it's just that certain dances aren't for everyone (duh). Even if bboying to YOU is the awesomest thing in the world it doesn't mean it is for THEM.
