From this thread, I'm getting the idea that style is something natural, something that just shows when you dance without you realizing it.

I've started bboying only a week ago. I was practicing my front step a few days a go and my friend said, "when you step forward and open your arms up keep your wrist rigid and straight because when they bend back, it doesn't look good."

I didn't notice that before and thought, 'why, shouldn't this be considered style also?' I tried keeping my wrists straight and it felt very awkward, and I soon lost the kind of excitement you get when you dance freely. In my opinion it didn't look all that horrible, although I could see my friend had a point.

If it doesn't "look good," does that mean it contains no style? Or does style involve natural movement at the expense of "looking good" or "dope," etc. ?

lol, you just started dude. EVERYONE will start off horrible when it comes to this dance..

as for "looking good". who gives a fuck. it's your dance, this is what you do for expression.. fuck what they say if it HAS to look dope. you have to progress and develop a good personality to become better. Not just physically, but mentally as well.

it's about realizing how natural u can move and using it to express yourself. the more you practice, the easier and more freely you can execute whatever you practice to look the way you want...to show the style you want

you can tell a story...

put on a character...

diss/burn/challenge the other bboy/crew...

show a certain attitude...

bboying is a canvas...instead of worrying what color paint you have...just paint and learn how to blend the colors better with the more experience u get..

^^high statement o.O..

I see style and tech,as was of expressing yourself through the flow of adrenaline and beat rhythms.I develop my style through personal experience, music influences the flow of my techs.I come-up with my own vision instead of taking another's path and walking all over it.B-boying is about drive, respect, and focus. You can't go in half-heartedly.You can't disrespect the tech either.Being focused is good so you can already have a set style for when the time comes.

i will say this one thing.

there is no such thing as a perfect bboy/master dancer..etc...etc

a true dancer in my opinion is always learning..always growing...always striving for that next thing...and thats in any form of dance...not just bboyin.
-_-

once you come to grips and realize _that_ then you understand the concept of dance.

hiya, it's great to see a discussion like this on here coz like some of u guys said some people focus way too much on learning moves that other people have already created, without actually feeling the music. Everyone now knows it as breakDANCING, but sometimes i feel like the focus isn't on the dancing. i am thinking quite hard about this specific issue at the moment so it's really useful to see what people have to say on it.

since i started breakin i didn't really focus on properly drilling toprock, and as a result i think the way i dance is possibly too much my own freestyle, so i'm focusing on trying to put that into a more 'bboy' look at the moment.

flying_steps, if you totally don't get any of what dbaznxdragon has said, then i would say that yes you are a beginner, but from looking at your vids i can see that you're not a beginner in the sense that you've not been breakin for long, maybe just from the point of view of following musical patterns.

noobXtreme : yeah totally right, your style is the way that only you can execute a move, because it's what's within you already. If somebody else suggests how to improve on what you're doing i think that yeah sometimes it's personal taste, but mostly it's because they can see potential to develop what you're already doing into something better. It can feel awkward to practice something unfamiliar to you, but the best thing to do would be to video both ways, or do it in front of a mirror, and try a few options - whatever you prefer the look of, do that, and do it well and with confidence. As time goes on you will feel more comfortable trying different 'styles' of doing things, and it will be easier. It's hard to explain but as well as style being natural, you also have to work on how to show it to its full potential. I guess it could be compared to getting dressed. you can grab clothes out of your wardrobe and throw them on, and that's your style, coz they're what's in your wardrobe and represent you, or you could take time to look through, and pick out things that go together and look dope and think about what you're doing, and really work on making your outfit look good. anyway hope that's made some sense at least!

peace x

I think the #1 way to develop your style/originality is to stop trying to worry about it or defining it and start just having fun with what you do. When you feel that joy and it is expressed through your movements because you can't hold it back anymore... that's real.

Not that I'm anybody special...

I'm just another noob trying to learn the ropes.

flying-steps -- watch that free video, and see how his movements are fluid and linked with the music. you've got the steps down but like madd said, just have fun with what you're doing, and really really focus on the music, and following the different patterns and beats, pauses, rythms and feelings. Listen to funk, and go out dancing - not bboying, but just dancing in a club.
