I think you should do both, and master both as they were different so you don't do some weird crazy shit of flare that can get someone killed. :P
I think that maybe you should stretch your legs in the V legged position so you can spread the legs like in a common flare your legs should be. IF that's the problem. If not, just go with those flares and keep practicing the common ones until you say "Shit, that's how it was done!" and you can do both.
BTW i think gymnastics flares are dope.
