Definition of a Bboy -
08-12-2007, 05:42 AM
People often argue about how we shouldn't call it "breakdancing" or how we're not really "breakdancers". Why is that? What really separates a bboy from a breakdancer? Is a breakdancer just someone who does power moves? Is a dancer just someone who moves around when music plays? If you call yourself a bboy, does that make you one? Is it ok for a bboy to breakdance? I think I can deal with that. I think that breakdancing is what a bboy does but it's not what a bboy is, it does not define me. I am a bboy. I can't noun but I can verb. I can't myself but I can dance.
Back in the day there were DJs who would throw parties for all the hood rats that couldn't get into clubs. There were people that would dance, throw down their best moves, show tenacity. There were people who would wear Adidas track suits and shoes with fat laces and Kangol hats. Not because it was cool, because it was hip-hop. People that walked around the street carrying a big ass boom box blasting their favorite jam so everyone could hear it. Education for those that didn't understand, and an anthem for the people that did. People that supported the culture. A kid who went to the record store and bought his first LP so he would have something to listen to when he was sad and Bambaataa would have money to eat. There are still people today that do the same. People that educate their peers and refuse to play a T Pain song or wear uncomfortable clothing and accessories just to be cool. What's more important, the moves or the movement? Skills or knowledge? Physical or mental? If you can do 50 air flares and you don't know who Kool Herc is, does that make you a bboy? What if you can't do half a windmill but know every member of the Wu-Tang Clan? Does it make you less of a bboy if you have bad ideas or no abilities? What is the true definition of a bboy? |

indeed.. my opinion is like this tho
if some dude learned the headspin, but couldnt toprock or do any other shit, then he is not a bboy, i believe we all agree on this.. but then again, if some1 knew the whole history of hip hop, the artists, the lyrics, but couldnt any moves, then again, i wouldnt define him as a bboy.. skills or knowledge u ask ? skills AND knowledge.. other than that, with the whole power/style subject.. i belive that every bboy should first get his foundation down.. that means every bboy in the world SHOULD have fluent footwork (even if basic), and some on the beat toprock.. when he/she learns foundation, and can make sets with that, then it is everyones choice what he wants to do.. some1 wants to be as all-rounded as possible.. some wanna go power only, some wanna go abstract, some wanna practice footwork the most.. i think its all good if u got good foundation.. to be able to at least show the basics, then go your way.. thats my opinion at least.. peace |

bboying is one of the many elements of hip hop and in my opinion you can choose which parts of hip hop you wanna represent
to me, hip hop is a way of life, and i represent bboying, street fashion and writing. i let ppl kno i'm hip hop, i dont say im a bboy cos i wud be limiting myself, i say i am hi hop. Its how i view things i am a bboy, i am a writer, and i represent hip hop. Thats my bid to put the knowledge of hip hop into people. Not just the knowledge, but the understanding. Bboying is bboying, i call it bboying to everybody and if they dont kno what it is, then thats their problem, i never say breakdancing, i just dont, its like calling a cat a feline when you could say cat easier , but even that analogy isnt close enough. I respect hip hop, and i will stand up for it whenever ppl try and diss it. Its my culture. Like a god hater dissing christians and they fight back. Same shit |

But i guess we do this sometimes because We are named by what had destroyed us namely the media. About that last paragraph... i dont think you are a complete b-boy if you leave out ANY of the breakin categories (Rockin, Floorwork, Powermove, Freezes) BECAUSE: We started out with rockin, then floorwork and freezes and finally power right ? the fact that power just randomly popped up is irelevant. Old Skool b-boys and Hip Hop heads claim that many of us have forgoten what it is really about, Which is to find your own style, do things your way, create something no-one has seen done. But you cannot be a full b-boy without a single powermove either, because it was part of the b-boy evolution. IMO you need to find a balance between all aspects of the dance. Thats why i generally dislike the power and style disscusions that go on here even though i try to focus more on style... sooo way to contradict myself. Peace |

I don't like to say bboying. You can't really do something you are. It's just a stupid term to me, idk.

to me a bboy is someone who lives the "break life"
someone who lives to dance. someone who spends the better part of their now life to break. they listen to sounds and listen for beats and breaks. they spend the better part of the day thinking of how they can improve on themselves. they dance for the sake of dancing. they dance cuz they no they can. they dance cuz they no they love to dance. they dont care. a real bboy goes and explores new boundaries seeing how far they can stretch bboying. seeing what they can add to it to improve it. a real bboy goes and expands their knowledge by interacting w. other bboys. they share their knowledge of hip hop/bboying. they help others to improve and improve upon tehmsleves. they teach ppl and get taught. a real bboy posts regularly on bboy.org and not bboyworld |

back in teh day bboys didnt dance to hip hop all teh time...they waited for a break (hence the word break dance) in teh song...didnt matter if it wuz disco or rocknroll....if it had a break they broke to it until teh break wuz over then they gave the floor back to teh regular dancers....
then kool herc and africa bambatta and all them came around and mixed all the "breaks" together and turned them into real hiphop and it slowly developed into what we have today |
