creativity - 08-08-2007, 09:27 PM

ok so ive been breakin for about 4 months ( locking for like 4 years ) but anyways
ive found some people to pratice with and everything. they been breakin longer than me. but when i go and pratice try to make my 6 step or any other step i do look unique they end up sayin it looks like garbage and sayin this is how its suppose to be done.

so what im gettin at is that i cant be creative with anything or do i have to look like everyone else to be a good bboy??

Nah it probably does look like garbage. Creativity is everything, but thats coming up with things. You said you were trying to make a basic move look "unique". This is usually just an excuse for not being about to do it properly. There is a certain form to the 6step that makes it easier to go fast and transition into other moves, because everyone does it like this, any other way usually looks strange. Have a different form isn't really a big deal. If people are saying you are doing a common move wrong, I wouldn't really classify that as cramping your creativity, as you go on you will find out that certain moves just have a certain way to do it and these people are only trying to help. But if people were hating on you actually coming up with stuff, thats different. Breaking can be complicated because its a mix of art and athletics.

I'd definitely agree with Chucky, Mighty Champion of Bboying.

Anyways, get your foundation down very well. Then bring in the creativity.

so, are you saying none of us can't TRULY be unique and we aren't allowed to do something different, but we should try moves in it's certain way because we are told to?

No, I he means that you should leave current moves alone. Create and make new moves instead of trying to do the same moves in different ways.

Creativity comes from within you. you either feel it or you dont
Learn your basics and get your foundations right. Listen to what those guys have to say, their experience is very helpful.

When u been bboying for the amount of time you have, i doubt you would have developed a unique style yet, hell , i doubt anybody is completly happy with their style, i know i'm not.

Remember, also, if it feels really good to you, it probably is. But then again you gotta know whats good and whats not.

if they ask you what one of your footwork techs is, then they're probably looking to undermine you. if its unique, dont call it a modified six step or whatever. just keep on doing your thing. in fact, pretty much all the different "steps" arent too different from each other. they're just techs composed of slightly different things in different orders and etc. there must have been some point of time where another bboy called someone else's new thing trash

I think creativity is something that you're born with, some people may have in them more than others. Thats what I got to say about creativity...oh and just keep on doing what you do. I never really knew how to do the sixstep all the way till I was a 7 month bboy, ya i know..WHOAAA! But that helped me develope some different dope footwork techs. Just keep on doing on you're doing and you're probably (hopefully, so all my advice won't turn out to be a load of crap in the future) devolope some crazy creative shit.

In other words... only be creative in your tops.
-Leave footwork and power alone.

...Just kidding.

There was a jam a few weeks ago, and some guy was doing some crazy-looking footwork/6-step shit.
It was looking pretty lame-o but I didn't wanna say anything.

He kept turning over and doing wierd shit, and it DID look different, it DID look unique... but it also DID look dumb.

Later, when we saw him somewhere else he said that he put "his own twist on it" then someone told him to not do that cus it looked gay.

...LoL.

you have been bboying for only 4 months..

first, get GOOD foundation. toprock, all the footwork moves (including the well known techs)

when u got that down REALLY good and i mean really, then u will do it the way it suits you best, change bits & pieces of it, to make it your own. but untill then, learn your foundation.

my opinion

peace
