MAD--- Mother against dancing... idk what to do... -
07-26-2007, 10:26 PM
Ok... so recently... ive been into bboyin more than i usually do, and my moms been getting worried about my future. im 17, I just graduated from high school, ive been breakin for a year and like 2 months (give or take a month) and she thinks that its been getting into my head. Like im addicted or something. If i think about it, i really havent been breaking THAT much. I mean, yea i watch a lot of videos and shit but its NOT an addiction or anything. I work, hang out with friends, and do other shit most of my day, but she still thinks its going to get in the way. Im going to be going to college next month and im working on becoming a lawyer. I know that its gona be hard, but my mom thinks that bboyn is going to get in the way and distract me.
Shes trying to make me quit, she even took away some of my privaleges because of that (which i think is straight up wack) and I have no idea what i should do... I came to a few conclusions... My mom isnt a bitch or anything, she just wants whats best for me... I understand that but i cant just give up something ive worked so much for instantly. Just because my mom assumes its going to ruin my career. A. Quit breaking and focus just on school and what is important. B. Focus on school most, and try to squeeze time in to break. C. Do both things at the same time and see how it affects me. Idk... |

I think you should try to squeeze option B in by sitting down and having a conversation w/ ya mom about why u break, how much it means to you (yadda, yadda, yadda) try to get her to understand. Then see if she'll get off your tip as long as you get her to understand that school is important to you and that bboying won't interfere with it.

well... the problem with that is... i dont have enough money to pay for college tuition and my own place to live in.
My parents gave me my car... so they'd take that away... and they're helping me pay tuition and pretty much supporting me. Plus i like my parents... this is like the only problem we have with each other. |

I bboy to discover and extend my physical abilities, to better understand the correlation of music and dance, and to further personalize the culture of bboying. What do you bboy for?
Hip Hop is a revolution of artistic standards. A revolution of music from beat-making, dance from bboying, poetic knowledge from freestyling, drawn/sprayed art from graffiti. Who're still aiming to revolutionize? Or are these simply standards of a newer genre nowadays? -Unofficial Deignorizer |

you dont really have to tell them everytime "im going to break bye!" ...
just do what you feel like man, being a lawyer wont make you enjoy your life (seeing as everyone hates lawyers, and since there are way too many of them anyway), might as well do something that might. |

You can do both. What are the school hours like over there? 9-3 ish? 9-4? With that time frame, breaking for 2 hours a day is doable. With decent time management, you could squeeze in those 2 breaking hours plus 4-ish hours of study a day. 'course, that would call for some sacrifices on your part on going out and social life and shit but...if you're 17 and nigh on going onto college, it's really only one year in your life you gotta sacrifice.

id say go for plan B. just as long as you know your priorities youll be aight. college gives you a lot of free time (no more of that 8-3 bullshit like in high school) so youll probably have some time to practice. and college can be real stressful too so you will practice just to relax your mind for a lil bit

^ yea i see what ur trying to say, i also forgot to mention that i work for my parents so they'll pretty much see me every day. And they live 20 mins away from my campus, so its not like they can't stop by.
yea sorta, but she'll always bring up the past when my grades used to drop, and she would have to go and talk to my teachers about it to help me get them up again. So she can pretty much blackmail me using that.

It's not as hard as people think to juggle school, work, and b-boying. I've done it for five years with DJ'ing and maintaining a relationship. All the while I've kept a 3.4 GPA and advanced considerably in b-boying.
It's just a matter of managing your time and making some sacrifices that you probably won't miss anyway. Like a lot of that time spent watching TV or just sitting around doing jack can be spent practicing, doing homework, studying, whatever. If you're diligent and can manage your time, it's very possible to do it all. |

. besides tv suck anyways, youre not missing anything thereedit: and you barely get any homework in college. just study like hell for the final and youll be fine |

I actually plan on putting post-its on my remote control and xbox controllers that say "you could be stretching" or "You could be practicing"
Ironically...I'm too lazy do that. |

Whooops! Sorry man, I missed the part which said you were in college...
The point remains the same that good time management as Alpha said is key. As per usual, a big part of time management is sacrifice of some sort. Take my monday schedule for example; I have class at 9-12, and again from 3-6 and then 7-8. I have lunch at 12-12:20 while walking to the gym, where I bboy for almost 2 and a half hours, get dressed again and head to my 3 o'clock. I meet up with friends at 6 to grab some dinner before heading off to class again. By 8:15 I'm in the library studying and I'm usually back home at 12. Shower, sleep, wake up at 8 and head in to uni again for a 9 o'clock start once more. Monday's the day I have most classes too, 6 hours (which isn't much) - most of my other days have 3 or 4, so it gives me more time for bboying and study, which I generally split equally. Pretty much filled up, and most of my other days are like that, except weekends of course. Just operate on maximum efficiency, which means prioritising. Which again doesn't mean priortising study over bboying; it just means finding time for both, which once more, is easier than you might think. *edit* I see ya thinking of law school...getting into time managment habits will rock for your law degree. I remember the first subject I did for law, I missed two weeks of reading and ended up 350 pages behind. :P (and yeah, I'm not working this year having saved enough for the meantime...work can come after I graduate. I know you have to work, so obviously your time will be cut a little shorter, but I'm sure you can work somethin' out) Good luck ![]() |
