Little Advice? - 03-27-2007, 09:50 AM

Hey guys, I need a little advice. I've been bboying for awhile, done my homework on the culture and such things, and really discovered why I dance and stuff.

Problem is, I'm about the only one around where I live that does(guess it serves me right for living on an extremely small Island in Canada..) Anyway, I've really wanted to spread the dance and the culture around here for awhile, but there's never been much interest, until recently.

A group of people I got in touch with, mostly girls, recently had some guys come down from Ontario and do a workshop here, on hip hop, bboying, and some popping and stuff....they urged them to get together, start practicing, get a crew going or something, and just increase the exposure where I live, and then they're coming back in the summer to see how things developed.

So I somehow got to talk to this girl, and she asked me to help out and be a part of it since I sort of know what's up, especially comparative to them(I mean you can learn some theory and some basics in a week, but nothing special right?). They've got the concept down, and they're not just into because it looks cool...they really understand the whole expression and feel thing because well, they're dancers anyway, and this is just a new style for them.

So my problem is, I'll be looked to for advice and teaching and stuff....I'm sort of at a loss on what to do...anyone here have any experience with teaching a group of people(not like a class, but working with people you know to help them get better?). I just want to do this right and keep the interest and get things going around here.

My plan is just to see what they know, really talk about the theory and the history, then work on style with basics tops and footwork, then work on power moves and stuff as needed, and sort of just let the group dictate how things run, and me just offer what I can. What do you all think?

Just dance.

Improve in general untill you're at a level where you can work on making group sets and so forth.

You'll probably overthink the whole situation and it'll end up just being about dancing.

Oh and you should totally hit that. *hand motion that i invented to suppliment "I'd hit that" statements... kinda like knocking on a door with only your wrist...*

Thanks Ringer, I guess I'll just show them a bit of what I know, help them learn what catches their eye, and just guide, not direct. A lot of dancing sounds good to me!

And maybe I will hit that .

And RuFF, thanks for the offer, but I don't live in Ontario, just the guys who taught the camp did and came down across a few provinces.

Well that's kind of what I was thinking, but also have a lot of time allocated to things like workings tops, footwork, and popping and just all around style, then maybe hold some battles every once and awhile just for fun and stuff(there'd never be another crew around to battle...unless I start two )..so who knows how it'll workout, I'll just be sure to keep it simple and play it by ear.

Well maybe show them The Freshest Kids. That will teach them all the history they need to know. Also maybe show them some stuff from like Redbull BC or another Bboy competition to show them what to work towards and motivate them.

PS. Teach them NOT TO BITE and to try to be as original as possible.
