Frusterated Bboy, need some wise words. -
12-13-2006, 12:44 AM
Hey everyone, I have been Bboying off and on for about 6 months, but I have just really started to practice.
I can..
Toprock,
Baby Freeze/Turtle freeze and a "airchair freeze"
Headstand(as long as I want)
Handstand(20 seconds)
I can somewhat do hollow backs
I go to alot of nightclubs around here and battle, or just dance, and I get alot of people that compliment me, and it feels awesome, but I am so "straight to the book" like.. my whole routine is.
Toprock for a few seconds, knee drop down, 6-step for a bit, then rotate and go into a turtle where I then change into a Air chair, fall on my back and do a kip-up, but that is the only routine I can do, so during my "battles" or dancing, I just keep doin that, and its really lame.
Mainly I need some encouragment I guess, I am getting so frusterated, my top rock sucs horribly.
It sucs practicing alone also, but I guess I have to deal with that.. anyways, if I could mabye get some encouragment from some brothers and sisters of Bboyin, that would be awesome..

Encouragement? Man, you got your motivation with your own post. If you feel like your routine is boring, then watch other videos and get some inspiration. Learn some simple stuff, like swipes and footwork variations. Even the smallest stuff can be changed around in your routines to make them look a little different. You know what you gotta do... I gotta break alone sometimes too, cuz I'm new to Hawaii and don't know many people who break. Just record yourself, find some flaws, and fix em, and slowly learn some new moves.
You already know what you're doing wrong; just look for new styles and combine it with your own. Once you get better at your toprock and all that, you're gonna get more props from people at the clubs, and maybe you'll find people that can/want to break. Just keep it up.

Hey, don't get down on yourself man. I started off the beginning of this year looking like shit. I could barely do windmills, my toprock sucked ass, i practiced alone in my basements and couldn't do anything but some sloppy 4-step and a few air freezes I could only transition from standing.
I've gotten a hell of alot better, found a crew to join, but am still in the middle of a fucking corn field here in Indiana... but this isn't about me. I'm just putting it into perspective. For alot of the bboys and girls here, their parents don't even want them dancing. Many of us have to battle against family, injuries, gangs, security guards, ourselves and much of society to do what we love.
And I'm certain that for almost every bboy and bgirl in here, the thought of quitting has crossed their minds more than once. You're certainly not alone
If you've been in a battle and show already... my bet is you've done more than half the bboys on this site. But don't give up on yourself, you've already made it this far. And you stated that you're just starting to practice seriously. From personal experience, one you start practicing, you're going to improve much faster than you'd ever expect. Just hang in there. Maybe find some new music to get you pumped up. Check out the DJ forum.
If you're looking for people that share the bboy interest... you've hit the jackpot man. Get involved in the conversations, the forum, the discussions and the online battles. Post some videos. The are a ton of bboys here that can give you good advice on what to work on and how to improve your sets. Everyone's here to help eachother improve day by day. Keep your head high and keep dancing.
If you were looking for advice from the Master himself...
Confucious say, man who stand on toilet is high on pot.
Welcome to bboy.org
Peace and Respect

I'd get on youtube or watch some videos for inspiration if you don't have other dancers around to get inspired by, there are so many dope varieties of moves, just try to watch a bunch and see the things that you want to adapt into your style and start training, your moves will only get stale if you stop trying new ones. Just start practicing new moves on your own and you'll break out of the routine. Good luck and Happy Holidays homie - BBoy GRIZ

if you can hold headstands and handstands as long as you want you should be movin right into spins and 90's... but i think you're talkin about teching your dance. Learn more steps (12 is nice for a mix up) and start doing steps into steps into steps... then power it up... then get ridiculous. That's the only way to learn good techs is to get stupid w/ what ur doing. I know these kids that do certain techs on the laces of their shoes. Specifically i like to do a six... to the 3rd step then break into a 12 for 4 counts... then back to six... 2 step and land... bring it around to the 4th count of a 6.... start swapping legs out and in to the beat... break into a 3 step... back to 6........ feel me? that's just basic shit too.

i suggest you start looking for a bboy around ur city... i used to break alone too but its so much better when u got sum1 to break with. If u cant find anyone... get one of ur friends into bboyin. Watch videos like the other guys said... experiment with ur moves, make new routines and combos. Good luck bro. Deuces.

trust me bro i feel like all i do is the same moves over and over and once i learn a new one it becomes boring very fast but ive always got motivation for getting better. for me its my parents they dont want me bboying and they hate it but they're gonna see what all the practice was for when i make it big and i will no question about it thats what i tell myself. and i practice alone now cause my crew is pretty much gone. so keep on doing what you do.
The only friend I need is the cardboard!

Forget routines. Learn how to freestyle, and you'll never "run out of things." Toprocking is really intricate, its not just sidestep, sidestep, okay I'm done, time for footwork! Its about dancing. I learned this later on in my bboying, but I wish I knew way back then, but its important that you get all this down since your still new to the dance. Also, learn how to develop your character; Dancing to the music and making certain movements to the song, and certain beats to the song. And don't focus on making wack move lists either, it just makes you feel limited and look kinda wack lol. But like I said, your still new, you have plenty of time to get better, it just takes time. Practice your foundation first, and you'll be fresh real quick.
