How you got started bboying -
12-06-2006, 02:24 AM
Hopefully this hasn't been brought up yet, I did a quick search and didn't notice anything like it --
Anyways, I'm just interested in people's stories on how they got started.
Maybe what influenced you, but most importantly how they practiced.
Did you practice with other bboys/girls or learn from a video / a forum like this?
Did you learn one thing at a time or many different things at once?

I guess I could start it off for maybe an example.
all through grade school and jr high I knew people who bboyed, I was taught some basic things, but never took it beyond that because I was sort of doubting my ability to ever get as good as my friends, at that time you were basically good if you could do a windmill, and pro if you could headspin for one rotation.
Now that I am out of highschool, I am getting back into it, but this time with confidence that I can learn.
Currently I don't know any Bboys in my town, most have given it up, or moved away, so sadly I am stuck with learning the basics from videos and the help of the nice people here. Which is difficult.
I am learning my tops right now, and really want to get that down before i move on, so that im not confused with a bunch of stuff... ive also worked on some drops and basic footwork. But i really want all of this to be solid before I go further. (is this a good plan? let me know)
and thats about it, hope to hear how and why you learned, peace

This is kinda off-topic, but i wuz readin da reviews for da breakdance dvd at da bottom of da homepage, and one jus made me laugh lol.
Basically he said da thang wuz great. He got it 2 weeks ago and already he can do lots of stuff: freezes, flares, etc.
Flares...
Frickin Flares..
He's gotta be jockin me haha. Maybe he already almost knew how to do flares....but somehow....i hella doubt it lol.
EDIT: I lied, da review said ONE week....wut da hell, must be korean .
Anyway i got started because i wanted to express maself in another way. I wuz already tryin poppin, so i jus said "wut da hell" n tried bboyin too...cuz it looked dope. Footwork is wut attracted me most, so here i am.

Y'all gonna hate on me for this ... it was that junior video. I already did some alot of freeze-like workouts when i was younger (narcisist) because i couldnt afford weights. I actually almost got into bboying twice before but the whole "your not hip-hop enough" vibe i got off people in the area totally put me off.

Oh yeh, in answer to the footwork/foundations question. Best plan ever. You cannot comprehend how stupid you will look if you tell anyone you can bboy and all you do is a couple of power moves linked up by shitty sloppy footwork.

i was into rock and heavy metal abck in the day, but then some1 somehow (still cant remember --- frickin drugs) gave me a copy of PE -Takes a Nation of Millions, its been a wrap ever since. I became a rapper/emcee, always writing. As time went on, i started improving, joined a few groups and recorded some stuff on Frickin Karaoke machines. lol. Finally, started getting into knowledge heavily, became a Conscious Poet and started studying Hip-Hop for real. Bboying has always fascinated me, but i never had the confdence or know-how to pursue it. Came across this cat out in Philly named Nice1 who put together a class at Temple U. Started taking classes and had to "drop out" because of work and recording music. But now, I'm getting my basics back together and looking to progress further, but NOW that i'm ready, theres no Bboys around! like wtf? Bought the DVD and looks like i gotta do this on my own.

you guys are gonna laugh at this
I started because my friend learned the worm and I thought it was the coolest thing ever so I looked up breakdanceing on google and this site came up
Who ever appeals to the law against his fellow man is ether a fool or a coward
Who ever can not take care of himself without that law is both.
For a wounded man shall say to his assailant
"If I live I will kill you, if I die you are forgiven"
Such is the rule of honor.

haha our stories sound the same as far as bboying goes, as soon as we decide to get into it, everyone mysteriously vanishes.
My hopes are that in learning, people will take notice and maybe people who know how would be down to get together. we'll see.

How about the way you guys practice? we got a lot of "when i got started" but not enough how!

when i was 9 years old i went to a conferenceand they had a hip hop show. after it a crew tought lessons, they tought six strep and helicopter, i picked it up real fast. that night at the dance with my new found awsomeness, and no idea what top rock was, i hopped in on a cypher with my six step to helicopter. after that i got into it for a month or two, then stopped becuase i was dumb and i shoudlnt have lol (actually because there was noone else doing it.) fast forward 4 or 5 years and i discover that there were 3 other bboys in my town, so me and my two freinds immediatley got back into it and became the bboys we are today.
unfortunately 2 quit and 2 moved away, so theres only me and my friend left.
Im like mcdonalds ive served billions.
