Hey EZ, I don't know how long you've been breaking but your freezes and power are good. It's going to take more time before you have them 100% smooth but if you keep up like this you'll get there fast. If you want to be a really well rounded bboy and win 1 vs 1 battles than yeah everyones right you should really work more on uprocks and footwork for a while.
On the other hand if the poses and power are really what speak to you and what you love and you have other people in your crew that can handle the uprocks and footwork then have you jump in for blows ups that's not necessarily going to be a bad thing at most crew battles. I'm a style head and I danced with power movers and ex-gymnasts in my crew and we get love, you just have to make sure that you fill in each others weaknesses so all the crowd sees are your strengths. And sooner or later do try to get your style and foundation down more, I know rhythm and the dancing of it aren't natural to alot of bboys but just work on dancing on beat, feeling the music and putting conviction into your steps and after a while you're foundation will be just as good as your freezes and you're skills will have alot more depth. - BBoy GRIZ |

Thanks all, everyone's feedback means alot to me.
Okay, DNA, I feel what you are saying, because all you are seeing from me are moves without tops or footwork. I'm actually glad you and everyone else are pressing me on this, that I should stress tops and footwork into my sets, because I've been doing alot of thinking about this. It's not that I don't do them. I do them! I'm just not satisfied with my top and footwork progression, so I don't post that type of footage often. However, I'm happy with where I'm at in other aspects of bboying, especially with freezes, flexibility, and busting out certain moves, which is why my samplers usually focus on that type of stuff. Cypherstyles, what you said makes alot of sense. A good balance of all bboying aspects creates a depth in a breaker that makes him versatile and sets him/her even further apart from the competition. It makes reaching the crest of a bboy so much easier, and with that now, it's obvious how tops and footwork are essential in the art of bboying, and this I cannot ignore. I've been doing alot of bboy soul searching, trying to figure out the meaning of expression. I'm still trying to figure out why I break, and what sets me apart from any other bboy. Every bboy is unique in his/her own way, and the bottomline is, every bboy has their ups and downs. As they say, there's always room for improvement. I'll see if I can work up the will to attempt to capture the full breadth of a true bboy. My bad for sounding so formal ya'll. Peace. |

Thanks Ringer, I'm not doing it right now but I taught BBoying for years so I'm good at being positive and hopefully practical about my advice. EZ the only other thing I'd say is this, there's alot of very dope, respected bboys whose strengths don't lie in their footwork or tops. I know mad people say that to be a well rounded bboy you need everything and they're right. But what makes Kujo, Junior, Physicx, Crumbs, Benji, and countless other BBoys well known isn't their footwork or tops it's their unique power, transitions, freezes and combos. So even though some people will disagree with me, I think if you dance with freezes and power that's okay. if that's what feels natural to you and that's how you express the music that's cool to me. Just make sure it is a dance and you put expression of the music into it, if it's just a sequence of tricks and stunts it's not bboying. Hope that helps man, good luck

You're ignoring the very important fact that those bboys are all at the top of their game for what they do.
Ignoring the fact that some of those bboys are actually criticised often for their lack of versatility and for repetitive moves, all of those cats are top level, ez is simply not explosive enough with what he HAS focused on to be able to neglect the foundational aspects that he's neglected to focus on. If you're a pro bboy certain aspects of your dance are going to shine through sometimes or if you're primarily a crew battle bboy, but none of the people on this site are good enough with their power and freezes to be able to make up for the fact that if they can't toprock or put down a decent footwork set, they are going to get clowned hard no matter what. It's a dance and all parts are important but if you just have moves you're only paying lip service to bboying culture and doing tricks. A real bboy has flavour, attitude, dance style, battle finesse and the ability to rock the floor whilst upright and on the floor as well, not just someone who walks up, does some lame toprock, a hollow, crashes it, does an airchair, finishes that and then walks away. Peace |

Btw, he isn't telling me to neglect the foundational aspects that I've been neglecting. He's simply telling me that the act of concentrating on a specific aspect of bboying, and not being *competely* balanced in all aspects, is not *completely* wrong in itself. (Not saying that it is, but...) If that is what makes me tick, why should I ignore my calling, because some analyst on bboy.org that only has harsh criticism disguised as helpful advice tells me so? Sometimes I think you post on people's threads just to tick people off, even though you mask it as some obscure form of intellectual feedback. Ever since I presented a position on homosexuality that forced you to rethink the beliefs you hold to be true, that basically shook the foundation you had in it, you've always held that against me, and I see how that crosses over into this issue at hand. Just know...I always take all criticism as creative, so even though it's obvious your attempts are to belitle me after that encounter long ago, it just won't work. |

Junior, Kujo, Physicx and the power movers I mentioned catch some flack for repeating sets but they're also respected by many, have won tons of international battles and impress most bboys and non-bboys not only as atheletes but as artists for creating their unique moves and sets. You're right, all of them are at the top of their game for what they do, but how do you think they got there? Working their ass off on their specific style building it up for years and years.
Since you like freezes and power it will be easy for you to enjoy practicing and quickly get better at them. So since those are the moves that feel right to you man I say there's no shame working towards your strengths and doing the same. There are lots of different styles and types of bboys and they're all good worthwhile types to work towards. There's no shame getting real strong in one area before you build up in others. You could train in tennis to get your serve down before really focusing on your backhand, it would be nice to do both but there are only so many hours in the day, so you have to prioritize. I know some will disagree, and thats cool, but I say just do what you feel BBoying is, what feels right to you, and that will turn out best and how you will best be able to make your own contributions to BBoy culture. Respect- GRIZ |
