Lightbulb Practicing without rest - 06-15-2006, 01:01 AM

Just wanted to share with everyone my recent practice experience. Well, I was just simply practicing a move, over, and over, and over, and I felt tired. But I was dedicated, and wanted to hit the move before giving up, saying FUCK REST. So I keep going, and I realize I'm starting to tremble. My hands and my upper body are shaking, and I feel the nerves in my body twitching. I shoulda took my rest before it got to this. The muscles on my right chest are actually contracting involuntarily. It's been a half hour, and its still like that (my fingers are shaking as I write this). Anyone have a similar experience, where they overexhaust themselves without rest, to the point that they are physically altered (in a negative way) ? This shit sucks, I usually do take breaks in between, but hell, I was going for the gold. I say now I learned my lesson, but hell, in a way, bboying and alcohol consumption are similar (for me, at least). You love bboying, you love drinking; you hate getting injured/getting completely depleted of energy, and hate hangovers. I'm going to sleep soon to recover & regain my composure. Or maybe a hangover is the cure? :-) Peace.

alchohol consumption is completely different, bboying doesnt destroy your liver or push you towards beating your kids/wife.

but yeah, when practicing a move you should rest not only because of physical over-exertion but your form gets shitty, similar to the muscle memory concept, if you cant practice the right form, what makes you think youll be able to execute the right form. do what works for you though, some people can still hit shit when they're dead tired

another thing, if you practice like that a lot, your body will get used to it and you wont experience soreness on such a high level

meditation definitely relaxes the body and recovers the stress (in the mind*****)-->when I'm beat and terribly depleted and feel shakey, I try my best to control my breathing pattern by inhaling and exhaling SLOW. meditation is all about that, and will bring you back to your original form in no time. oh, stretching helps me relax as well, it makes me forget about what was previously plaguing me and gives me a new goal (flexibility) while not as energy-consuming, as, say, active bboying.

Practicing till your burnt out is pretty stupid. Its all about PACING yourself. This applies exactly the same in battles.

u should practice until u get tired as much as possible. don't pace urself. the reason i say this is because if u practice until u get tired a looooot, then u will start building up a tolerance level. take me for example. i used to session for about thirty minutes, stop, drink, take a lil break then start again. it didnt get me anywhere. now i session for four-five hours straight. now, at battles, i barely ever get tired cause of that. but to ez: i know what u mean about the trembling thing. happens to me when i do nonstop flare practice. it suuuuucks!!

I do power first, then top-rock. You can still toprock when you tired, it's pretty hard to do or learn power tired. I say pace yourself. Eventually you will get tired, and then you keep going to build endurance, but pacing yourself will get you a lot further. Cardiovascular exercises are good to do too. They increase you endurance and lung capacity. So yeah, go run 2 miles every day and you will see an increase in your ability to dance longer.

you dont want to work yourself too hard or you get tears in your muscles that can sometimes be too hard for the muscles to easily recover

I couldn't disagree with the people who say to "work until you're dead so you build a tolorence" more...

Here's some info from a bodybuilding site that might enlighten you:

As your strength increases, your workouts are more demanding and require more time from which to recover.

The average guy sitting in front of a computer has the capacity to increase his muscular strength by 300-400 percent. However, recovering from physical activity puts demands on many of the body's organs, such as the liver, kidneys and pancreas, to name three. These organs do not have the capacity to increase their metabolic functioning by the same 300-400 percent your muscles can.

When you think about it, this is something you already know from experience. If you do a light workout it hardly takes anything out of you. Your recovery is swift. But when you do a grueling workout involving heavy weights and a high intensity of overload, it can take days to feel fully recovered.

And since the indispensable key to strength training gains is progressive overload, you must find a way to increase the intensity of every workout and allow more time to recover from that workout.
Take time off. The number one cause of lack of progress is overtraining. By simply not lifting weights for a week or three you allow your body to fully recover and to add that new muscle growth you've already stimulated so you can return to the gym and resume training effectively.
The site:
http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/tr...h-training.htm

Even if this might be for a bodybuilding website it still puts a lot of emphasis on RESTING YOUR BODY AFTER EXERCISING IT. Not only is it better for your overall health, it'll prove positive for your strength improvement. I'm not even saying you have to rest for 3 weeks or whatever either, but at least treat your body for a day or two rest. I'll tell you what, it's been over a month since I got hurt and (against my better judgement) I tried just one freeze yesterday to see if I've lost my strength, and guess what, I held that shit just like I used to.

But not everyone has the time to run every day...people have jobs, school, university, family, shopping...its amazing how much time is taken up in the day by something simple like food shopping or washing...believe me if i had the time i would train AND run AND train some more, but i cant.
