help! -
10-19-2005, 12:25 AM
okay so here's the situation:
I'm 14, and I've been teaching myself to bboy for about 5 months. I really need to go out and session. but my parents only let me go for an hour because they don't want to leave me alone AT A SCHOOL for lighthouse (after school thing where people do homework, play bball, bboy, n just hang out n do w/e) they also said the same thing about going to Can I Kick It. "Only one hour becauseI don't want to wait there for along time". the total time Can I Kick It will be from 3pm-8pm and I at least want to got from 3pm-5:30pm I told them they don't have to wait, but they don't want to leave me alone because it's "far" from where we live. I try to session a little before school, but my bus doesn't get to school until 5 minutes till the bell rings, so there's never any time. has anybody had an experience like this before? how can I convince my parents to be less protective? |

How old are you? you could always try practicing at home. But if your parents are really that over protective I would talk to a school counselor. And about Can I kick it?, try and get a ride there with friends, but if you can only go for an hour I would def go at like 6pm

im 14. my parents are over protective freaks. they won't let me get a ride with anybody they don't know. they don't let me hang out with anybody they don't know. i'm basically limited to hanging out with my friends that live close to me. thats not a problem, but they don't like bboying so nobody to help really. they barely let me go to the mall by myself. and they don't like driving me places because of all the gas (mondays & wednesdays i take Kung Fu, fridays I try to go to lighthouse, etc.) and my dad won't leave me alone or anything. he actually went inside the school with me when i went to lighthouse and i can't concentrate with him there. he says he doesn't want to go anywhere because he'll have to drive there, and back to the school to pick me up. and I can't stay after school and walk to lighthouse because they make me go home first. and I can't take the metro to lighthouse cause the metro stop isn't for about 1.5 miles walking in a place with little to no streetlights

maybe try to get a cell phone so if your parents get worried they can just call you to check up.

Try sitting your parents down and saying something like "mom, dad I'm 14 years old and I'm tired of being treated like a baby. I can't have you control me for the rest of my life, I need to make my own decisions and become an adult. You have to relize I'm not going to be a child forever so please ease up." or something of that nature.

Well I do try to session a little at lunch, but its kind of hard to find an empty hallway without a teacher or security guard in it. I get about 4 minutes before school after my bus arrives and that doesn't erally help. I think the main reason they don't want to leave me alone is gas prices or somthing. I can go to Can I Kick It for more than an hour now, but I can't go to lighthouse still because it'll "waste gas to drive there and back twice" so yeah. the only way i could think for him to let me go for more than an hour is to pay for the gas each time and that'll get kind of expensive.
also there's almost NO bboys during my lunch, only like.....2 others. one of them is learning like me and the other is usually with his girlfriend all through the lunch, so it's just me n the other guy learning. |

just find a ride with someone else to go out, just do it and have a good time. see what your parents do after that, they can call you or wtv just tell them that ya you got a ride and that your okay you'll be home in a bit.
unless you are able to convince them to be more leniant just go ahead and do it, it'll make them realise your capable of taking care of yourself. |

well, the teachers don't really care, but we're not supposed to be in that building that we practice in during lunch. and the admin don't allow breaking. somebody got suspended for doing a 6-step O_o
and my parents won't let me get a ride from anybody they don't know either. plus i live far from all the people that i do know that break. |

just try to tell them I'm 14, and I want to be treated older. Just say how they give you almost no freedom, and how you want more freedom, be treated like an adult ext. P.S. I might see you at can I kick it, I'm going with kid ice and a few other people from around here.

man u're 1 unlucky fella...
i cant bboy in school for the sole fact that i'm takin the o levels this year and the teachers DEMAND that i stop... as for parents... here's a solution... it worked for me... sit down with yo parents... do the same old talk... and have a bet with them... let you go where you want for a month... if nothing happens to u they agreement goes on... however u'll have to inform them of where u go... now i get to go session till 2330 when i need to... how cool is that? |

Never compare ol' skool with the new! It's like askin who's smarter between the wright brothers who invented the plane or the scientists that made it faster! I'm sure Kurt (props to him for the flare) never saw the airflare comin!

I told my parents that I can take care of myself, but they don't believe me. they tell me to do stuff like take out the garbage and wash the dishes and say thta I should "know what to do" around the house, but they never tell/told me specifically what to do. So I'm sitting aorund at home and here's the dialogue:
my dad: Go take vacuum your room me: I'll do it later, I'm about to eat my dad:No you'll do it now! besides you can't eat, you're about to go to kung fu and you can't practice after you eat! me:but its 2 hours away my dad:I'm tired of this attitude of yours! that was just an example of my dad, but yeah. they said that i always say i can take care of myself, but then they don't let me. "you can't go to OFF by yourself, you'll get stabbed or somthing because you'll be alone in downtown seattle" even thought OFF was at the ShowBox across from pike place market. but yeah, I take kung fu and they don't believe i can take care of myself. they search backpacks before you go into the showbox for weapons and they still don't care. my dad is one of those parents that have "tough love". so like.....when he wanted to teach me to swim, he threw me in the middle of a pool and yelled "SWIM!" they're so f*cking protective but in a tough love sort of way that its driving me crazy. >_< |
