Online BBoying. (READ THIS) -
08-02-2005, 01:50 AM
One flaw in today's bboy scene is the internet. Most people when they give advice to people starting out bboying, the first thing they say is "WATCH VIDEOS AND COPY WHAT THE GUY IS DOING!!!".
What most bboys online do not realize, is how important a unique style is. If you start bboying, what you need to do is: 1) Find a local session, or start one 2) Get lots of bboy music, old school hip hop 3) Learn how to dance to the friggin' beat, doesn't matter if you learn toprock 4) Learn six step and all the power moves you can, EDIT:and when I say this, I'm agreeing with Pyro of xFx. We discuessed my original post and his opinion was that I forgot to mention "power is less important than style" which I agree to. Also, another flaw he pointed out is that I did not state the point of not making 6 step and power moves YOUR style. I mention this step purely for the fact of having foundation and the potential to integrate power moves into a set with an original style. 5) Get your own style. When you're lying in bed, and can't sleep, think... think HARD... about what would look cool when you're on the floor, visualize yourself pulling off a set. Remember, or write down your ideas, try them the day after. Style is not born overnight... unless you're a prodigy, neither is power, and if you quit a power move... you're dumb... and I will smack you. EDIT: Most important part... step 5 What most bboys online also do not realize, is that online bboying is not a system for you to impress people. It's for you to find guidance and role models. This is why online bboying is bad: 1) It promotes cheating, as in people taking pictures when they're falling and cannot do the move. 2) It promotes biting off other people, biting their style, their toprock, right down to the way they start their power moves. As far as power moves go, you cannot bite someone while doing a power move. You can try your best, but it will not happen. So if you find yourself biting from someone online, just do power moves, because then you can't be accused of biting, and then you won't be forced to lie to yourself and other people. On a final note, if you bboy online. Always be truthful, do not post pics of you that look like you pull off a move, it's not helping you, you will be gaining false fame, and it's not helping anyone that sees your picture. For those bboys starting out, or people that still think "breakdancing" is still the correct term for what you do when you bust some ill sh*t. Look through the forums, look through the gallery, do not post a picture of a half screwed up the ass handstand, that you thinks looks cool. It's not bboying, learn foundation, that's what will get you somewhere, focus on what u think is cool after you get the basics down. -Edward (AKA BBoy 2TaLL2BrEaK? My real BBoy names will stay hidden forever, so that no one will bite me... EVER!) P.S. - Sure people that have never met, develop the same moves, and call each other biters. So what? At least they made it themselves. P.P.S. - Sure the stereotypical freezes are cool... AKA Nike, Hollowback, L-Kick, Hollowback, V Kick, Hollowback again... Airbaby, Airchair, Hollowback, Inverted Hollowbacks... Planches (kinda)... but please... imagine if battling was everyone doing the same footwork ending with the same freeze...get some originality guys. Try to make the freeze your own, something that gives you a sense of accomplishment... P.P.P.S. - That right before u sleep thinking of a routine crap really works... I know by experience. EDIT: Don't f*cking give advice, or tell people how to do a f*cking move if you've only done it once or read a guide online on how to do it... I will smack you. EDIT#2: Do not post something... that has already been posted, if you want to post a reply to a topic, read all the replies in order to make SURE you do not say something already said. |

P.S. = post script.
P.S.S. = post script script? = not sense-making and you used the stereotypical wrong. i think the word you were looking for was... common. the video watching thing, i'd have to disagree with. i dont think anyone just goes: copy him. i was starting this guy off bboying last wednesday. first, i taught him helicopter because it's easy and he'll feel like he's learning something. so after he's happy with that, i showed him the basic toprock steps then told him that he had to create his own steps to develop his own style and he also had to watch videos of other people's style and extract the different little moves and techs that he particularly liked to get an idea of how to move. and that's what everyone should do. |

Translation:
Hello, I think I'm the shit. I will now share with you stuff you already know, cause I'm sexy like that. This type of thread has appeared so many times, if I had a cucumber everytime I saw one I'd be able to jab two up the nostrils of every person on earth. It's fairly pointless, seeing as most people know this shit already. Did I mention we know this already? Like Zeke said, we know this shit WITHOUT you having to come here sharing your pearls of stupidity with us. |

the post was focused more at noobs and ways they can create their own style. watching other ppl tho will help ur style. there is a fine line between that and biting and i think most ppl know that.

Beginners have to immitate in order to learn... Developing your own style isn't something you decide to do when you first start dancing.... cuz having your "own style" of sloppy footwork to stabbed mills doesn't really amount to anything.

I disagree.
I think as a newbie it's good to watch videos first and develop own style when you're better.How should a newb develop his own toprock for example,when he doesn't know what it is? |

As for top rocks, the way I look at it is that it's an introduction to your footwork, and I personally don't understand why there is any guidelines to toprock, you do what you think looks good. If you've already read a post like this, then you can just forget about it. Look at the forum and see if you can find another post just like this one. Tons of new bboys ask what to do when they start, this is pretty much a guide about what to do, and what to make sure not to do. Sure it's a little extreme, but it gets the point across. As for not seeing anyone advising new bboys on biting, I've seen it everywhere on this site. If you think I think I'm the shit, I don't. I hve a far way to go, but from what I've seen, this is what pisses me of about online bboying, basically people faking their pictures in order to gain false credit. Other things that piss me off at sessions are people teaching the wrong crap. This is my opinion, that's why I had the post, but if can't agree with my post suggesting ways in which you can attain a unique style, and try to PREVENT biting whatsoever, then feel free to voice your opinion and vote on the poll. I'm not preaching, I'm expressing my opinion, just as I do on the dance floor. -Edward (AKA BBoy 2TaLL2BrEaK?) Edit: I was mad when I wrote that. |
