Recommend a good D.I.Y. breakin' mat? - 07-24-2005, 05:33 PM

Hey! Ive seen many pictures on this site with people breakin' on homemade mats and stuff, ive seen a variety of different ones and would like to make myself one that would give the smoothest yet firmest surface for breakin, cause all I have at home is carpet and I'd like to get a good feel for some of the powermoves and stuff.
So can someone please give a good 'recipe' for a homemade mat that would be really smooth/frictionless/but firm (as in doesnt bend too much say if on carpet or w/e)

Thanks

i dont know of any that would be good on carpet except smooth wood but its expensive. i had the same problem you do but i just decided to go buy linoleum (6x9 for 15-20$ at home depot) and go on cement. it hurts when you mess up but you learn a lot faster. haha.

carpet and grass are alright for somethings (ie kipup, flips, handsprings, some power moves like flare, millz etc) but stuff like 1990's, handglides, headspins and others it really sucks for. Thats why I want something that I can actually 'break' on.

If you don't need to move it too much get HARDBOARD.
It usually comes in 8x4 foot sheets (also 4x4 and 4x2 in some places)

Cover the seams with a single strip of brown packing tape (not duct tape - the stuff they use to seal cardboard boxes.

It will usually cost you less than lino, is better to dance on, it doesn't bunch/crease/ripple and is more like the kind of floor you'll get in clubs.
If a piece gets damaged you replace just that part at low cost. If lino gets damaged you can tape it sometimes but it usually means a whole new sheet.

Personally I'd take hardboard over lino any day of the week.
I'd also take concrete over lino - but I've always liked dancing on concrete - that's where I started.

A bboy without style, is like a broken pencil.

There's just no point.
