help with throwing a jam - 04-19-2005, 02:29 PM

i'm looking to possibly throw a bboy jam sometime in the next 4-6 months, or so. problem is, i've never been to one! Squints has been to plenty, so he's been giving me some input. he says we'll talk more about it when he gets back though. although i haven't been to a bboy jam, but i did compete in a You Got Served 2 competition. i know hip hop jams are gonna be a lil different, but their format was like this, and i was gonna based my event off of there's.

Started at 7 PM

there was an open circle goin on, mainly the bboys there were the ones bustin moves.

at 8 they started doing registrations, while the cyphering continued.

about 9, these two singers performed a few songs, while the judges got situated.

battles started about 9:30. first with the group competition. they got i believe 5 minutes to do their stuff. there were about 8-10 dance crews. after, they had the final rounds. all in all i believe it took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. including judging.

then the solo event. there were about 15 people (including me!) everyone got like a minute to do a few sets. then the judges narrowed it down to the top five (including me again). then the top five just went out for about 3 rounds and they picked a winner (unfortuneatly, wasn't me).

all in all it was about 4.5-5 hours long i believe.

anyway, i was thinking something like.

7PM: Open Circle
8PM: Registration
9PM: Poppin Judges Showcase
1 on 1 Pop Battles
10PM: Bboy Judges Showcase
3 on 3 Battles
11:30PM: One on One open call outs/open circle
12AM: Conclusion

I estimate there were about 200 people that were in the audience itself, possibly more i was thinking maybe $10 admission for spectators, $5 for kids 6-12, under 6-Free. $2 dollars for video cameras. Free admission if you have A&B honor roll or something educational like that. $15 for participating bboys. $10 for participating poppers. 3 on 3 Winners get $500. Popper winner get $150, but of course, depending on how the turnout will be if this goes down, we can always increase the prize money.

A former co-worker of mine that DJs said she charges $100 dollars an hour. i know everyone is different, but, i'm thinkin a well established DJ will ask for like $130-150 range, hopefully, lol. i know this is pretty long, but i really wanna make this happen. any further help would be appreciated.

1)be careful with the DJ, the right music can make the event good, and shitty does the opposite (obviously)

2)organize your battles - some a time limit (ex. each popper gets 2-3 min per turn?)

3)and make sure u get a good host! ive seen a jam turn to shit cuz the host SUCKED

I don't think it's fair to charge bboys more to enter than to just do open circles, I find that cheap, because that could take the fun out of it for bboys who want to enter for experience and just to battle people in a more formal setting you know, so to charge them extra to enter seems terrible, $10 to get in may very well be a bit stiff as it is depending on the size of the jam, I think you should up the charge for cameras to $5, $6 or $7 or something arbitrary like that instead

I think you should start small probably because you're going to incur a lot of expenses, again I haven't been to an event yet but i'm trying to just do this out of logic and here's what I think:

1) you've got to rent the venue, which is going to cost you quite a bit by itself;
2) probably some kind of insurance, and let me tell you those bitches over at insurance know how to slap people across the face and be like SERVED SUCKA SERVED, GIMME YO' MONEY SUCKA
3) DJ
4) security
5) flyers, advertisements, promotions, etc
6) exhibition battles, maybe flying some well-known people out in the hopes of increasing your turnout, etc
7) some kind of city permit or some red tape like that that'll kick you in the ass

so pretty much we can establish the fact that it's going to cost you a shitload of money to throw a decent jam, even if you manage to get some kind of sponsorship deals worked out which are probably going to be a pain in the ass. even vending booths, whatever. all that revenue is probably not going to cover much of the overhead expenses, and getting turnout could be a problem, I don't know what the scene in your area is like.

moving on to scheduling, I think you should tighten it up more. Compress it more, as in maybe start it earlier because if as you said you want to give good students a discount (and depending on the difficulty of classes a student takes it might not be that hard...a kid with 1921934939392 AP's and honor's classes is genuinely a better student than someone who's getting A's in easy classes), then you'd want to let them get home earlier and get more turnout if it's a kid-friendly jam. I mean, if you're going to end it at 12 in the morning I think somebody's momma is going to get pissed and smack some sucka. Really. Mr. T style. But I digress.

So in conclusion i'd start it earlier, like 5 or 6, leave an hour for registration, be firm about the schedule, start things on time (and i'm sure people aren't going to want to show up on time), I don't know about popping, if it's an event of mostly bboys they'd probably get antsy and not want to show up on time so improvise and think of a better solution to that. Then have 3 on 3's and figure out how you want the 3 on 3's to work, a time limit or set rounds (the dilemma is you don't want to end good battles too early or let people drag battles on for hours cuz you have to end stuff at a reasonable hour right), etc.

I've been thinkin of planning one at school to raise some funds for a trip to Japan for the group. I got a few contacts with DJ's, and I could probably hook up enough bboys and maybe a few emcees and beatboxers for open mic. Even some graff writers to do demos on stage, but I'm wondering on how i could persuade the teacher who organises these things, and persuade enough people in my largely narrow minded school to come along.

use magic brownies to persuade them.

If that doesnt work, try some marvin gaye and tell them how young they look. Maybe light a candle.

I will now attemp to drown myself, you can try this at home, you can be just like me.-Slim
