Bboying doesn't need to be Mainstream.... - 09-29-2004, 12:51 AM

I've been noticing a good amount of posts, 99% by the newest Newbs, saying how Bboying needs to be more mainstream sense its so cool or what not....i remember thinking the same thing about a year ago...but in all reality, its fine how it is.

Whats the need to have it be mainstream? like countless other posts that have been posted, it has been said, Bboying is fine how it is, enough into the mainstream that it grabs the attention of future Bboys, but mostly underground, so it can't get raped by the Media.

I did some bboying at a dance the other week, i had absolutly no spinning at all in what i did, but yet, since i was "breakdancing" people thought that i did somewhere in it. When the media shows Bboying, it doesn't include two of the coolest things in Bboying, and two of the most important, Top-rock, and Footwork. Even look at the movie in which a good number of you Newer Newbs came here, "You Got Served", when did you see any any top-rock? Footwork? least when i watched it, i didn't notice any, there might have maybe been some footwork, but top rock, not at all.

Then there is the posers that come out, and we all know there are enough dorks already that come out and roll on the floor thinking they are funny. sure i know that when i started getting into Bboying, i was poser, thinking that someone since i decided to take up the title as "Breakdancer", that the moves just came to me, and since i bought the basic moves vid, i could watch it 10 times and know how to do windmills.....and tried them during dances, without practicing, and i am surprised that i didn't jack myself up by doing so. so there are enough annoying people out there already during dances, having it go even more mainstream just increases the annoyance.

Having Bboying in such events like the Olympics, or on TV would just take away from the essance of bboying, which you will find more and more so as time goes on. It just doesn't belong on the air waves to go onto your tv screen. Belongs on your floors of your house, the streets, sidewalks, and certain buildings, in the Ghetto or the Urban, but not somewhere where the media gains control of it and says what it is and isn't, thats the Bboys job. Sure i've only been Bboying for about a year now, but i have learned that Bboying is fine how it is, although it may not be in everyones homes besides a commercial or two...

Bboying is what you make it.

ya i would have to agree with the point that if it were in the olympics it would take away the essence of bboyin, but then again where im from there arent many bboys around, so having it go main stream would be good in my part cause there would be more bboys. i think that "u got served" might have made it more mainstream but it could have given people the wrong idea of bboyin. but ya i would have to agree

word out breakers and dance with mind

this is an old argument...

Dont bite the hand that feeds u, eventually everyone helping u will get annoyed...jesus.

Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.

funny how a kid who has been breakin for a year talking like he knows wats up, 1st let it go mainstream how long do u believe breakin can stay in media before they get bored of it, like they did in past. Its better if it goes mainstream for a bit. So we can have more people wanting to break. once they start they will learn the real story behind breakin. thats how we all started, we wanted to spin on our heads then later we learned more about breakin.

here is the way I see it, though my opinion may not matter to many of you since im a newb. I see b-boying as people expressing themselves through a really cool dance. In a way, b-boys are entertainers, expressing themselves through their dance. There is a lot of practice and skill and technique involved in all the moves, which normal people arent able to do. If b-boying went main stream, you could go anywhere and you would find someone who was able to windmill or head spin or something. But thats whats nice, there are not many people who can breakdance. So when you go somewhere and you bust out some of your moves, people are like, woah thats the shit! They may even go home and try some of these moves themselves, but when they see how hard it is they quickly give up. A few will actually succeed in learning some of the moves and may become b-boys themselves. The new b-boys will create some of their own styles and moves to keep b-boying fresh and alive. It would be nice to have more b-boys to have more and better competitions, but I wouldnt want this mainstream.

It all depends on where your from. Id like to see it a little more mainstreamed. I lived in Korea for the past 2 years, and Id love it when you turn on the tv and theres a commercial with the Expressions Crew in it. Now, I get back home to Nashville, and people here dont know what bboyn is. I gots to move.

ya i know its a old subject in most of the "Bboying is going mainstream" threads. But since it has been awhile, and it seems that lately more and more of the Bboyin should be more mainstream posts had started bugging, so i thought i would describe the best way i could why its fine how it in, on a topic that Underground is the way to go, not whether or not Mainstream should be a good option.

For all you guys who say there is no bboy scene in your area, i think if you try hard enough, and fall into some luck here and there, you'll be mighty surpised. When i first started i figured, oh i live in Utah, everybody says its small so it must be. Then come to find out there is actually a pretty good Hip Hop scene, and its own Hip Hop store.....and some pretty sick Bboys, including Pirho from this site. And i am sure if i Bboy here and there a bit more often, i will find people will the strangest places, i found a dude at a Bowling Alley because i pulled a Air Chair, then he decides to show me up with a air Baby, it was a cool experince.

Bboying is what you make it.

Over here in a city never known in the United States. Modesto, everywhere you go there are people who can do windmill/flare combos. When I say everywhere I mean EVERYWHERE.

Every comp, festival, club, EVERYWHERE.

We got lots of breakdancers here in mo-town lol

I think it would be cool to mainstream, but not by the medias terms, by our terms...

If we can't it's fine the way it is I guess
