Exclamation Quest of the BBoy - 09-13-2004, 11:36 PM

Hello Everyone.
Lately ive been scanning a lot of message boards and im seeing more and more of the " is breaking going mainsream?" or " sport or art" topics popping up. And i personally believe that none of that matters. We as Bboys have to stop looking at what the world is doind to bboying and start looking at what we as dancers can do. I personally love it. Its not just a dance. Its part of a culture which today has grown into its own type of people. When i meet another bboy its like finding another english speaking person in europe. You can relate imediatly. We are a people. And if the world wants to showcase us in whatever they want at the moment, then let them. If they want to look away and forget us, then let them. We are who we are and i can at least say for myself that regardless of what they do im not going to stop Bboying and passing on my new found lifestyle. When bboying startd it didnt start because someone saw it on tv. And it wont end because someone sees it on tv either. All im trying to say is that we are 1/4 of a culture. And WE should be trying to perserve it. Kudos to you who do and shame on you who jump on the bandwagon and dance for any moron who pays you. Keep it real and keep it alive. Peace

It all has to do with history repeating itself. We don't this to turn into with our music has. And because there is smart bboys like me, it will never happen.

Well things have been going that way for a long time Marcopolo but the problem that I have in the public eye is that I sometimes have to tell people the truth. Maybe yes as I see it and I don't want to hurt their feelings. The trouble is they shouldn't get hurt over it all at all. Unfortunately had this experience recently with a girl that was curious when I mentioned teaching again. She claimed that what she does is her style. Basicly she calls what she does Hip Hop dancing. She was told this by my former mentor I am sure who is her teacher and it is commercially more viable for him to mix styles. What they are doing is nuthin but Jazz dancing. I used to do it myself. I was even a Ballerina but I don't say I am doing sumthin that I am not. I love people to dance and encourage but I get sick of being mislabeled. It is only those within the culture that know what they are seeing and that is true. I had to correct this girl too cause she may have been interested in going to my workshop. I know someone was gonna say sumthin and she thinks she is expert!
Are you also saying that we sell out by getting paid? Would you suggest I go back to working in an office and being fat/unhealthy again? I love what I do and there are people that I say I am not working for them. I do not sponsor products for example. I do not also wear anyones labels! I make my own gear! The fact is too most of the people that pays us are morons especially here in Australia.
Anyway you mention that this is a new found lifestyle. I have been into it fo 24 years so we'll see.

Enjoy tho and feel good doing whatever you do! Rap Attack

No man. Dont get me wrong. getting paid is not selling out. Its going pro. Selling out would be something like using breakdancing to sell Mc.Donalds. Because lets look at it. what major contribution has mc.donalds made to the culture as of late? none. but yeah. im al about repping the brands that keep it real. i just dont like people whoring themselves out to the media for money.

but on the other note. i totally know where your coming from with the girl. unless your in the culture you dont really understand. its kind of like learning a new language. unless your from the country you have no idea how off your dialect actually is. and yeah, there has been a lot of mislabeling going on. but also with modern day breaking there are a lot more intertwined styles as well. its becoming more and more diffucult to really say whats "hip-hop" in the dance world. like you said ppl are saying that its "thier style" but really style isnt bboying. being a bboy is bboying. so unless your a bboy and are part of the lifestyle what your doing is no different than jazz dancing and gymnastics. just because you can speak a language it doesnt mean your from that country.
