Breakdancing Principles -
07-21-2004, 04:15 AM
Hi. I'm josh, i'm new. How are you? Good times!! I'm gonna jump right into it, like in only a couple days, i've really noticed breakdancing as something very uniqe and yea, individual, can be done almost anywhere, and it's just very fun i'm thinking, to do.
And who better to ask, than all you folks. I've seen alot of ya'lls clips ya'll have made, very nice, checked out those battle of(year here) breakdance competitions. Just really soaking it up. I wanna know, first, when did you start, did you teach yourself, did you use videos, whatever, how did you learn basically? But mainly, what are the principles for good breakdancing? I mean, to me, there isn't a "set" or a "technical" approach to it. You just MOVE!! But for this, how do you develop SPEED and TRANSITION from one movement to the other? Whatever they might be. Also, what do ya'll do to stay LOOSE? What stretching exercises do you do? Or do you even need a TON of flexibility? What else, i mean, there's so much, but i DO, want to know where that balance ya'll have comes from. Like you'll be lying on your stomach, but you got your hands pushing on the ground and your legs are in the air, but you're not doin a head stand. What's that?!?! Is that a STRENGTH thing or what? Well that's it for now. What ya'll know?? Thanks. ![]() |

first of welcome to the wonderful world of Bboying! ( AKA Breakin').the only real principles that i know of for bboying is dont quit , dont bite, always pratice and have fun! speed comes from pratice , transition comes from pratice even staying loose comes from u guessed it ....pratice. some moves take strength (hence why there called power moves ) but surprisingly some only take momentum and a good grasp of the physics of the move . u have to have @ least some flexibility but as stretching exercises , normal routine workouts that u probaly already know how to do ( push ups , sit ups , crunches , ect..) will do just fine . i suggest u first learn moves like top rock , 6 step and some freezes . dont try and progress to power moves when u know ur not ready to learn them . alot of power moves take months to learn. if u choose to learn a power move , be prepared to dedicate lots of time and energy ( and pain unfortunatly ) to learn that move . thats basically it . have fun breakin'

well dang, heh, looks like alot of my questions were already answered, sweet, but, i still don't get some things, ya know, on building speed, for WHATEVER move you're doin, or just flowin from one thing to another. we all got our own unique natural feel for it, some people i guess, like to just start hopping up and down and then just fall down on their shoulder or something and start spinning on the ground, or a person just does a whole back flip into all this wave dance stuff, sweet, but WHATEVER, we already basicaly KNOW what is us, cause it's all preference. but yea, how do you build speed and all that?
also, should you EVER be tense while breakdancing? if so, is that where the landing on body parts comes in or what? thanks. |

Welcome to the site,
i started bboyin when i was 11, 14 now. went to classes when i started, got the basics down like toprock, basic freezes, footwork etc. i did about 2 months learnin the basics, then taught myself. i didn't use videos, you just got to be confident. basicly, i learned of the people i break with, it's good to have someone to break thats at the same level as you with... there are alsooo guides in the Moves section if you need any help. |

most of your questions will be answered by practice
work on 6 step and then you tell me how tense you are - it's somewhere in between totally relaxed and totally tense yes there is a lot of strength involved the smart bboys stretch... at least sometimes the lucky ones were born that way, LOL get a few moves down - some tops, footwork and a freeze, then worry about the transition they're all just words until you put it in to practice |

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers

just practise and practise and practise, the only way your going to better is to practise, even the best bboys n bgirls in the world practise, strength is pretty important, it doesnt matter how much strength u have at the start coz bboying improves that strength, tense? never, unless u are like in a comp and really nervous but otherwise ur fellow bboys n bgirls should help you out! I remember my first comp i wasnt that good but still all the other bboys encouraged me n went crazy even if i popped the simpliest of moves, thats wat bboying is all about, just express ur emotions thru ur bboying n u will be fine

Hello and WELCOME to your new favourite site, the people you see here will guide your through your problems and triumphs in your bboyin career. Now, about your questions, the answer to all of them is practice.
First of all i sugest you learn : basic toprock, sixstep. sixstep Here is a video guide for the six-step. toprock Here is a video guide for toprock. Now i hope that helped, when you master these learn some more footwork and try to make your own toprock style. After this you can then move on to powermoves or whenever you feel ready. Good luck, happy days and peace. |

hi ya'll, thanks. One thing though, about the Six Step, how long did it take you to get it down? Is this common, when i'm doing it, it's not flowing, my arms are so stiff, etc.., my legs aren't straight, whatever. Just practise eh? Allright, thanks. Lata skilz!!
