Teacher? or learn by urself? -
07-20-2004, 12:18 AM
im learning at a pretty fast rate.. but i have a strrrrooong desire to learn faster and faster... i love improving when it comes to bboying... thats why the thought of taking a breakdancing klass krossed my mind... but lately ive been getting second thoughts of the breakdance klass because i dont want to lose respect as a bboy...i was wondering if in the bboy world those who learned on their own get more respect then those who took a breakdancing klass? if so? ill drop the whole breakdancing klass idea... kan someone tell me?

It's all opinion man, if it'll help ya out and you can make friends that break, go for it. I've taught myself everything that I know, and granted it's not much, I've put a lot of hours into figuring things out myself. I think taking classes is a great way to improve, no shame in having a teacher. Crew members teach eachother stuff all the time, I see no difference bro. Not sure how others feel about it, but I'd say go for it.

Like wat he said on top...its all optional xP
When u learn from a teacher u may get correct form and everything but u do not really catch on and get your own style cause youve been only learning from 1 guy. But when u learn by yourself u get to try out new stuff and get pretty amazing stuff xP but u may mess up on basics and stuff xP. My opinion: Break with a partner or crew You learn from each other while developing your own style =) |

If you have someone to teach you, it helps A LOT. But most "classes" have some dipshit as a teacher. If someone offers to teach you, then thats dope, if no one does, your on your own. But I don't really see why people are so proud about being self taught, it's not a big deal.
Oh yeah, the "you don't have your own style if your not self taught" thing is bullshit. |

breakdancing classes are good, but if there are another "students" then you'll be learning same as them and you're style will be similar(if not the same) to their, same with crews.
if you wanna learn power, then you should take breakdancing class or find a crew cuz they help alot. it depends on what you like. i like being part of a crew, but when i practice style i'm working alone, and they do that too, so... do what you think you should, no one will disrespect you if you takeing breakdancing class |

hey man, me and a few others i know on bboy.org take classes. but we dont learn really anythin to tell u the truth. i mean if we wanna know how to do freezes and power moves we can ask our teacher and he will help us with em. but when it comes to footwork and stuff u cant really ask him for that kinda stuff...well u can but its not somethin i really do. cause footwork and toprock etc is somethin everyone has and is unique for each person so u cant really have the same style as everyone in ure same class. so yea...i dunno bout what a class would be like for u but for me we just go there mainly to practice and have a jam at the end of the lesson. its all good

i teach myself, BUT, i have had other people guide me in the right direction. before skool got out, i started learning how to do mills in breakdance club, but i didn't get them until i kept working on them by myself. same with a flare. i taught myself how to do crickets, swipes, and 2000 though by looking at vids and .gif pics, so now i'm just working at getting them better/faster and more rotations. there's nothing wrong with having a teacher. like others said, when you're in a crew, that's just about the same cause you all help eachother out.

No! Not at all!!!
i wanna start off by sayin that no matter how u learn i dunt think it matters. I mean its not like during a battle ur opponent is gonna ask u howu learned and if u say i had a teacher hes not gonna say o dude i dunt respect u. However i really dunt beielve in the idea of having a teacher because like someone already said they cant teach u how to be unique. Granted, they CAN teach u power but i mean im teaching myself power right now, and i aint payin no1 to teach me. Plus, when i took up breakin i thught of it as a thing to do on my own, away from skool, and anway from all the bullshit in life. But with a teacher u gotta get ur parents to drive u at certain times or be ready certain times and practice certain times and certain moves. But with me,, i just wing it and do whatevr the hell i want and i enjoy that freedom, but thats just my opinion. But yea i think that if u got a mentor or a crew member to teach u then u shuld consider urself very lucky cause thats the best way to learn. Kinda suck that no one round here breaks but i teach myself so its all good. Imma leave it up to u but i really dunt like the idea of having a teacher,,, not that u will lose respect,, but for may ohter reasons. |

I've had to teach myself for a while now with some( limited) help.
I dunno about classes, but if I could have someone else to break with, that'd be really cool. |

I GOT AN IDEA
Have a teacher who learned all by their self, teach. Thats what I have. He gives me tips on what im doing wrong because he honestly believes its better off to learn by yourself. Thats all he does, he might teach the six-step and cc's. But once you get to the complex moves he doesnt teach you step by step. He tells you and shows you what you have to do, but you have to solve your own problems and figure it out from there. |
