Internet V.S. Non-Internet B-Boys/B-Girls. -
07-14-2004, 11:37 PM
Simply put above. Which do you think would be more successful?
Here's an elaboration: In this context, let us assume that "Internet b-boy/b-girl" is someone who depends solely on help from advice on forums such as bboy.org and downloaded clips, to achieve their goal to becoming a renowned dancer in the b-boying community. And let us assume that a "Non-Internet b-boy/b-girl" is someone who depends solely on the help of b-boys/b-girls of a local community, as well as other b-boys/b-girls from other locations, to help them achieve their goal of becoming... blah blah blah. Which one of those "types" of b-boys/b-girls do you think will become a stronger dancer as a whole? When I say stronger, I mean possess more knowledge, dance out a better style, and a strong, positive, and determined attitude towards b-boying. IMO, I think that a non-internet b-boy/b-girl would become a stronger dancer. The fact that they can interact and actually meet these real dancers will, in my opinion, give them strong pointers as to where to go in their b-boying life. Since they will also see other b-boys/b-girls from other locations, they will be provided with even more variety to certain point of views in b-boying, and more tastes to different styles they can incorporate into b-boying. As well, if you're having trouble with something, these people can either show you themselves, or they can learn with you. Which is great, because then there's one more bond in the b-boying community to be a part of. Nothing makes you feel better than achieving something with a friend on your side to help, and vice versa. But internet b-boys/b-girls are good as well. You will get even more opinions, thoughts and styles through forums such as this one. As I have seen through many threads that I have read, many people have different thoughts and opinions about certain subjects. And there are plenty of people here who may have just as much of a heart for b-boying as the local b-boys/b-girls here. The only reason why I think a non-internet one would be stronger would be because there's the anonymous factor here. So bonds are a lot harder to create, because you've never seen the person, nor do you know what the person's real deal is. With the non-internet ones, I find that once they're grouped up, they share their skills and experiences with each other, and the other will provide an ear for the other, and either help them out, or just listen. To be there. So, when expressing yourselves to one another, let it be a cypher, a battle, or even speaking your mind for the right reason, you can do it a lot easier because your friends have helped you along the way. At least that's how it's been with me. So in summary. Internet B-Boys/B-Girls - Much, much better in variety of opinions and styles. Not so great with the bonding. Posers and beefers, for example. Non-Internet B-Boys/B-Girls - A good variety in opinions and styles. GREAT bonding, since there isn't an anonymous factor. So you deal with the real thing. Of course, there are posers in real life. But during a cypher or a battle, that's when your real b-boying identity comes out. Who knows. Maybe other people in here have a totally opposite thought process than I do. And that's why I ask. |

Definitlly non-internet bboys/bgirls, theres actually someone who can show you how to do something from all angles and not just one picture. Also, they can help you how to get into the move. On the interent, it's much harded to explain and move then to show it. And yea...

an internet bboy is not really a bboy if you think about it...
how can you call someone a bboy when they havent been in a cypher or a real battle? someone once told me that a person becomes a bboy/bgirl when they have their first real deal battle...I had my first battle 2 months after I started and I won it(that night, I lost 2 battles after the one I won, lol), I guess I was already somewhat of a bboy then but really feel like I became one last summer when it was all about bboyin, it took over my life and I've been practicing as much as possible and everything I did was about getting better move/style wise as well as knowledge wise... so yeah, its good that some people are getting help through the internet but that all it should be...ask a few questions, get some tips/pointers and just for general entertainment...I usually come on at night before sleep or when I cant practice cause of an injury or something, to see what peeps are talkin about and shit... there should be no internet bboys and if there are, go hit some cyphers as soon as possible... |

i think tradin advice and "secrets" to moves on the net is tupid.
the net should be used to get in contact with other bboys in other areas and to find out about jams goin on in other places. the reason i say you shouldn't give or receive advice (unless you know the person) is more than half the time the "bboy" can't even do the move their tryin to explain. but they want everyone to think they can do the moves. and because they can visualize the move in their head , doesn't mean they should know how to explain it. think you know a move and actually havin the move is totally different. i only say this cause i seen kids do this shit before, get on the net and explain moves they can even hit. some kid in my area was explainin how to do mills to people and i knew for a fact he didn't have mills cause he would come around every know and then, then i'd see him up on here. gay stuff if you ask me. |

as for the e-bboy and bboy thing, there really is no diff. theres jus some e-bboys who jus sit behind the comp all day and do nothin in reality, in this case, these are the wack addicts theres the bboyz who dont even know what the internet is and they jus hit jams and hit cyphers livin it up the real bboy life and there are those who do both, hell, omar spends alotta time on the internet and if you deny him bein good, that grounds for a flogging peace~ |

Im an internet bboy. I use the information on the net as my main source of knowledge and guides to moves. Sure i have some breakin freinds and we practice together but when i practice at home i learn off the net, and im learnin damn fast so im gonna have to say internet bboy is better for me.

most power is about technique. and if your taught wrong it'll take you longer to learn the move. plus you'll probably hurt or pull a muscle alot easier. |

well, i learn from both. there are a few breakers i session with occassionally (when school was in, it would be every week), but now that i graduated school, i only have myself to rely on and i don't get to see other bboys as much. but with me, i already had style and stuff before i took up bboying, and the time i spent with local bboys was enough to put me in the right track (as far as power moves go). i just like to learn stuff on my own. that's how i was with flipping too. i had someone teach me how to do backhand springs, but after that, i trained on my own, using the same principles i was thought when learning bhs, and now i can do all sorts of crazy stuff. i guess i'm just a self learner. i suppose right now i can be put in the category of internet bboy, but that's not necassarily a bad thing. because i learn on my own doesn't mean i can't be as energetic and knowledgable as someone who always sessions with other people.
