Glowstringing vs. Breaking? ...Hmmm... - 07-12-2004, 06:18 PM

Yo,

I'm new to this forum and I wanted to know whether fellow breakers think that glowstringing (yes, glowsticks are involved) has any potential to become more popular like breaking has in recent years.

Below are three vids of what I'm talking about. Please give feedback on what you think of this new form of dance that's emerging. The first vid is very long, like 20 minutes, so please be patient.

Check 'em out! They're pretty good examlpes of what's going on:

TT2 - Tekno Turtles

SP vs. DC Battle (Crazy kids from Texas)

Dj Juice (me)

GyralAuroras.com - This shit is HOT

If you like what you see, check out GyralAuroras.com for Tutorials http://www.GyralAuroras.com

Peace,

and P.S. - please DON'T confuse it with raving. It's called POI

There's really no comparison. You can break with glowsticks to add flavor, but really they're completely different from each other. I don't think it'll ever be a movement as big as hip hop.

Breaking is a part of the hip hop movement.

Glowsticking is a part of raving, a part of the culture of raving. (whether you sub catagorize it is still part of it) and raving could be considered (or soon to be) considered a movement with glowsticking stringing along as part of it.

One life one tribe one love one blood
Too much has been shed its time to rise above
You don’t have to understand it and you dont have to like it
But were much more powerful when we're UNITED
Ignorance fight it Knowledge embrace it
Have sympathy for people who too scared to change shit
Dont talk it just live it
Enjoy life absorb every minute
Quit placing the blame
Put your mind towards change
Hold the torch, light the flame, make a difference
One love one nation lets get uplifted

This is very true. Both Dances are a lot different, and arose from different music genres; yet, both are still a part of the underground dance movement, which I think is exploding with new things each and everyday.

I would compare glowstringing almost to skateboarding or tap dancing, because it involves using tools to convey the art, whereas breakers utilize nothing but their bodies.

But I also think that breaking and glowstringing and are similar in the way that they both require a certain level of athleticism to carry out certain moves. Some of the moves in the vids I posted are utterly Jedi. Only certain people with unique body types can accomplish complicated moves.

By the way, that last clip is DOPE .. I didn't watch the other ones because they were too big, but haha yeh the last one's real nice .. he didn't really move that much though =/ don't poistas usually dance while they do shit?
Yeah that's the chicago style. They're known standing in one place and doing all kinds of complicated wraps and shit. If you wanna see POI DANCING at it's best, however, you'll have to watch either the SP vs. DC battle or the Tekno Tutles compilation. Those guys are fuckin' sick.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Peace,

StarRizer

You're joking right?

Poi?
New???

PMSL ! ! !

And no - there is NO chance that an ofshoot of a Samoan fertility dance, Maori weapon, or Maui foodstuff (pick whichever origin suits you best) is EVER going to be comparable to bboying, and done by the same kind of people.

They are NOTHING like eachother.

I mean, yea, if you'd mentioned poi directly then fine - but you didn't.
You mentioned "glowstringing" - there is NO reason for glowstick-poi other than raving.
If you wanna talk about REAL poi, be it 1, 2, 3 or 4 ball versions - then don't come at it from a BLATANT raver slant - because that is ALL the glowsticks are.

If you want night time - then fire is the way - the traditional way - and by FAR the most impressive.

Don't bother versing it with bboying though - you might as well compare bboying to throwing boomerangs or hula if you wanna do that.

A bboy without style, is like a broken pencil.

There's just no point.

i'm just gonna second aura

and not say much else , because i'm SO FAR BIASED towards hip hop and breaking, and SO don't get the raver scene , that anything i'd say would come across as a diss towards another culture... and it's not that i don't like it, i just don't understand ( and don't really like beats past , say, 120 bpm)

it takes a really dedicated person to break- or at least, to be a good bboy. It looks like poi is slightly less damaging to your body, although not simple in the least... for what it's worth , which really isn't much
that might just mean that the poi dancers are smarter than we are , because they're NOT daily practicing something that is known for spraining fingers, displacing bones, andripping muscles apart !

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers

True, but it's still hard as hell. Hitting yourself in the eye with a glowstick or slapping your knuckles and balls with glowsticks when it's cold outside isn't exactly LESS damaging than bboy-ing

there nothing like each other, but when i started learning how to break i was praticing breakdancing, but now, i pretty much mastered glowstringing
being sarcastic I suppose?

well, howcome both kinds of dance are hosted at raves?
