Glowstringing vs. Breaking? ...Hmmm... -
07-12-2004, 06:18 PM
Yo,
I'm new to this forum and I wanted to know whether fellow breakers think that glowstringing (yes, glowsticks are involved) has any potential to become more popular like breaking has in recent years. Below are three vids of what I'm talking about. Please give feedback on what you think of this new form of dance that's emerging. The first vid is very long, like 20 minutes, so please be patient. Check 'em out! They're pretty good examlpes of what's going on: TT2 - Tekno Turtles SP vs. DC Battle (Crazy kids from Texas) Dj Juice (me) GyralAuroras.com - This shit is HOT If you like what you see, check out GyralAuroras.com for Tutorials http://www.GyralAuroras.com Peace, and P.S. - please DON'T confuse it with raving. It's called POI StarRizer |

There's really no comparison. You can break with glowsticks to add flavor, but really they're completely different from each other. I don't think it'll ever be a movement as big as hip hop.
Breaking is a part of the hip hop movement. Glowsticking is a part of raving, a part of the culture of raving. (whether you sub catagorize it is still part of it) and raving could be considered (or soon to be) considered a movement with glowsticking stringing along as part of it. |

I would compare glowstringing almost to skateboarding or tap dancing, because it involves using tools to convey the art, whereas breakers utilize nothing but their bodies. But I also think that breaking and glowstringing and are similar in the way that they both require a certain level of athleticism to carry out certain moves. Some of the moves in the vids I posted are utterly Jedi. Only certain people with unique body types can accomplish complicated moves.
Thanks for the feedback guys Peace, StarRizer |

You're joking right?
Poi? New??? PMSL ! ! ! And no - there is NO chance that an ofshoot of a Samoan fertility dance, Maori weapon, or Maui foodstuff (pick whichever origin suits you best) is EVER going to be comparable to bboying, and done by the same kind of people. They are NOTHING like eachother. I mean, yea, if you'd mentioned poi directly then fine - but you didn't. You mentioned "glowstringing" - there is NO reason for glowstick-poi other than raving. If you wanna talk about REAL poi, be it 1, 2, 3 or 4 ball versions - then don't come at it from a BLATANT raver slant - because that is ALL the glowsticks are. If you want night time - then fire is the way - the traditional way - and by FAR the most impressive. Don't bother versing it with bboying though - you might as well compare bboying to throwing boomerangs or hula if you wanna do that. |

i'm just gonna second aura
and not say much else , because i'm SO FAR BIASED towards hip hop and breaking, and SO don't get the raver scene , that anything i'd say would come across as a diss towards another culture... and it's not that i don't like it, i just don't understand ( and don't really like beats past , say, 120 bpm) it takes a really dedicated person to break- or at least, to be a good bboy. It looks like poi is slightly less damaging to your body, although not simple in the least... for what it's worth , which really isn't much that might just mean that the poi dancers are smarter than we are , because they're NOT daily practicing something that is known for spraining fingers, displacing bones, andripping muscles apart ! |

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers
