Battle Mathematics - 03-22-2004, 06:32 AM

hey yall just had something on my mind and wanted to know what yalls think esp the experienced bboys in here.
as far as battling goes what do you think is the best way of picking a winner? round my way we battle like its a maths lesson its like a turtle has less points than a jackhammer and a headspin has more points than this or that etc. we dont like write down points for moves or anything i mean its like that how we think..in term of which move is more impressive and on how many times you can do it nicely and stuff
i think that in battles it should be the one who impresses more with the overall style who wins and not the one who did 4 airtracks after the other guy did 3. i think bboying is an art form we shouldnt reduce it to a chess game

also how do u guys normally battle? over here we just kinda keep going till both sides run out of moves.. do you guys do it with time or with rounds or points or how do you work it?

peace!

you limit the number of rounds for a reason...the biggest being that if ur doing more then one battle, like in a tournament style...u must limit or u have nothing later on. not to mention if u only have 3 rounds to show ur shit, u gotta know what ur doing.

that math way is dumb, no offense, if u got a sloppy 90, does that mean u get more points then a nasty turtle? moves dont have points...thats not a good way to look at it.

theres a lot of ways to judge, some of the guys do it round for round, if u have a nasty round, u get a point, if the next guy comes up with something equally as nasty he gets a point, if he doesnt, well he doesnt get a point.

some people judge all around, take notes on what they like or dislike and how it was all put together and come out with who came out on top.

some look at the elements of whats going on, how well did they perform, how original, how heated, and mainly EXECUTION.

execution is the key, if u dont have it, u wont win, period.

Dont bite the hand that feeds u, eventually everyone helping u will get annoyed...jesus.

Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.

breathe. personally i think its really hard to battle unless you've bin doing it for awhile..you need to make alot of sets and get them clean and ez for you to hit like second nature. i tihnk an important element to battling is just being fast. my friend talked to sum mad old school heads and bboy thats been in it for awhile. dance. do everything in ur top rock or footwork. its really not hard to get props just having decent toprock, footwork set and then combo blow ups. don't get nervous..freestyle to the footwork you know or usually you'll get repetitive

and by the by, who was more impressive is a matter of definition, if u got 3 airflares and i got 4, i could be more impressive, it depends whos doing them better and the execution.

it shouldnt be about what one person thinks is more impressive per move, some people find turtles nastier then 90s, doesnt mean thats always the case.

its more the elements in the dance then certain moves, and how the person dancing brings it/

i aint offended i think its dumb too i prefer the system with rounds.

when i said round my way i mean thats what they seem to do in my (small) country so far i havent had a proper battle with a judge etc only small ones with friends or classmates to see what each other can do.

i think the rounds system is better or what happened to me last week would become commonplace: i was 'battling' this guy and each time id go out and to toprock -> footwork -> some kind of freeze or else toprock into a power move and hed just come out and do some freezes which is way less tiring. anyway learnt my lesson that day and thats always have a bunch of freezes for ppl like that cos no point wasting ur powermoves on them.

Something as intracit as b-boying cannot be judged by means of integers and mathematics. It's an art form, and all depends on the combanation of Power, Style, and Footwork and how you use these elements to create something special. It's truley magnificant when you make the music and you become one.

yo everyone the title is a metaphor dont take it literally. we dont have someone on the side writing points for every airtrack during battle lol. (we dont have any ppl doing airtracks either but thats beside the point... )

i was just wondering what scoring system u use and what way you as a bboy will find to judge who is better

Heeeeeeeey....Chess is an artform...

But anyway, the way the battles're set up around here, it's set up like a gymnastics event, except instead of having like 3-5 judges, there're 3-5 sections with like 5 people in each. After each round, Each person writes 1-10, and the average is taken, then the rest follows as in Gymnastics, the score's added up, etc. Then the same for 2nd, and 3rd round, then the 3 are averaged.

Only problem with this, is bias...a lot of battles end up being a popularity contest this way.

hehe not hating on chess i play too it was an example sorry

so in a crew battle does everyone in the crew have to come out once for it to be considered a round? and how strict are they about crews battling with the same number of ppl on each side
