How Long Did It Take? -
03-18-2004, 04:00 AM
I've been breaking for only a couple months... since decemeber. It feels like I haven't made a whole lot of progress. I mean, i got mills and a couple of freezes n stuff down, but it feels like I'm not really getting anywhere. I was just wondering how long it took you guys to be able to get in a circle and just throw down a decent set. I'd like to know how long before I'm actually decent enough to do it in front of people.

you sound just like a friend of mine. I say your ready. just go in and throw down. Anything i do at the moment i still say damn i can do better than that. no matter how good you are you always want to do better.
as for the no improvment thing. sometimes it feels that way. i bet you have though. you may have things smoother you may have more style. you just have to triain and train new moves more.

If you say you got mills down in a matter of months is pretty good, I don't know what your reasons are for not being ready to do it in front of people. Cleary you have the skill; just work on a routine; and when your in the cirlce there not a feeling like it, you'll break 10 times better than you ever could practising.

Yeah I agree. Just to get mills and you only been breakin since december...sh*t I took me a very long while... But anyway, I use to be like you, hella shy cuz I thought I wasn't ready but just go and bust. Yor not going to to be perfect like others you might see or break with but atleast your bboyin and practicin. It took me sssssooo long till the point where I realized I am wastin my time just sittin around when I can get better so I didn't care I just did what I knew and I just got better from there. You don't need hardcore moves to bust... Just do it!!

the only limit is urself...ur holding to high of goals if uthink u suck after a month. what are u basing ur opinion on? think about it
Dont bite the hand that feeds u, eventually everyone helping u will get annoyed...jesus.
Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.

just if you think you're ready, then jump in the circle, but before that, take a little time to think about your combo until you're experienced with circling, cause first time you're pretty nervous but after a while you get used to it and instead of thinkeing, "shit, every1's looking at me" you'll be thinking "mmm, what next??"

The longer anyone stay like that or afraid of anything for that matter, the harder it is to change. It might feel weird at first but once you do it, and do it well, you will feel a sense of accoplishment like no other. Get a routine up, practise practise practise, make sure it's smooth like butter but with big chunks of your own style mixed in to that methophorical butter. Let us know how it goes.
WRX_breaker - Are you in high-school? If you are, then there should be tonnes of dances where the floor is just waiting to get ripped up, by mad style. If not maybe organize somthing with fellow b-boys/girls, or if your older, go to a club when there is not alot of people there with a bunch of your friends. They'll support you, and being impressed by breakin is contagious, if your friends are "Markin Out" the crowd will catch on. Unless it's a Country Western Bar...had that happen once...

Personally I think u should try to get into circles regardless of skill level , cus for getting in circles at highschool dances was hella fun plus u really get an opportunity to learn to improve your moves and get some skillz. Heres some moves u might want to work on if ur wanting get a few moves before going into a circle
Uprock
Toprock
Sixstep and Shuffles
elbow pose
handstand or walking handstand
Mini Mill getups
Kip ups
Swipes
Front handspring
1-handed backhandspring
turtles
handglide
Miniflare
Helicopter

thinking you suck can be your motivation and make you humble..i think its takes a few years to look decent in a circle
I've trudged through the sediment in search of the rhythm
Dove soul first to bathe nude in its abyss
Paid dues and made music my religion
Now I listen, close my eyes, and forget I even exist

1-handed backhandspring???? why you need that for, like your ever gonna do a 1-handed backhandspring combo when your a beginner, and front handspring? you gonna jump into the circle with a handspring? good luck to you kip ups, I can understand, hell of a good way to recover after a fat bail... but then... mini flares???? you ain't gonna need that, you can make some dope combos out of some newbie moves ya know?

ok , ok so if ur a newbie you may not necessarily need 1-handed backhandsprings or Mini flares ,but it does help to try to learn as many moves as u can as a newbie so you got plenty of combo possiblities. I was just giving some suggestions for moves u could learn but u can start with what u want it's up to you. I only suggested miniflare cus , if you at least have a good start u can combine miniflare with sixstep and shuffle and go into a freeze , till u get continuous ones.

yeah ur right we are talking about newbies , for me the moves I started with were footwork and basic freezes ,kipups, front handsprings and stuff. I think it all depends on the person , cus I knew a guy who bboyed back in highschool and he had mad flares , windmills ,headspins and 1990s, but he really didn't do much footwork or freezes, so I guess it would be better to start with some fundamentals , cus they help u transition when you start getting better.
