Hip-Hop Speech - 10-06-2003, 05:47 AM

Whatup kids,

College sucks, but has its points... I am completely brain dead right now, but I need some ideas to get my ball rolling on this speech about Hip-Hop.

Every person in my comm class each had to pick a unique topic, well i figured Hip-Hop, but for some reason this girl(blonde, rich, who knows nothin about true hiphop, prolly gonna takk about 50 cent, ja rule and shit, wrote hip-hop down as her topic :P ) anyway so i pout "underground hip-hop" and I wanna blow everyone away and tell them what Hip-Hop really is.

But I can't think of a way to start it

Any help would be bomb:
I have to start off with an "attention grabbing" story that relates to hip-hop?

any ideas?

hmm u should talk about the 4 elements and intergrate that in to one huge community

if u can show footage , use have some breakin at the start to catch the audience

This one time...this hot chick rings me up and says to me in a horny voice, ''Oh baby come over now, no ones home''.... So I went over to her house and no one was home..

yeah it depends if your allowed to use visual aids or not... if so then id say go with some breakin, a movie or some pics.

if not then i dunno... i guess stick with a story

"He sits at home wondering, is this life worth it? But then again, nothing's perfect. If only he could expose his true skills to someone higher in the game......"

that's jus a quick first sentence i thought of off the top of my head.......

and another

B-boying, DJ-ing, Freestyle Rapping, Graffiti... what do all of these have in common? NO they are not the activities of a troubled youth, they are the acitivities of a True Hip Hop Fanatic.

another quick one...

Copywrite, CunningLynguists, Aesop Rock, Mos Def, many of you have never heard of the majority, if not all of these individuals/groups. This is because, they are the basis of Underground Rap today.

A clearer definition of underground rap is.....

then jus go on n explain n shit

neways, thats my quick starting sentences, IF you're not allowed to use visual aids

I think putting that quote from K-os about hip-hop would be tight

"Rap is something you do, Hip-hop is something you live"

I think thats how it goes, someone has it in their sig.

Hm...well if someone else is doing hiphop, n the teacher probally wont know the difference, its especially important u cover a lot of ground make the distinction between true hiphop n what everyone thinks is hiphop...no holds barred or u might be on the losing end up that thing if she comes off with a stronger presentation

Dont bite the hand that feeds u, eventually everyone helping u will get annoyed...jesus.

Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.

What? Did you just say that hip hop didn't come from troubled youth? That's the most outrageous thing I've ever heard.

Anyway, like Anubis said, make sure to cover all the bases. And most definitely erase the notion that hip hop is a kind of music and that the people that are being called hip hop now (J-Lo) have nothing to do with hip hop.
Or that bboying started and ended in the 80s.

Basically, clear up all the myths about the hip hop culture.

distinguish
if this gurl is doing 50 and them GANGSTA rappers, then she gonna be talking about RAP, not hiphop or any of the 4 elements, just 1 element, u can add all of them and leave out the gangster rappers cuz they are just faggets

u can add some bboying shit, start out sayin hip hop aint anything about gangsta shit, it about a big family of elements, u cud use aids of some beat boxing too or djing scratches, mcs and bboying

and some ill graffs, ask someone on this site to hit a big hiphop bomb

make sure u burn this bitch

the thing is he doesnt know what shes going to talk about, those were examples, for all he knows she cuold bust out wit a very real presentation of what hiphop is...in which case he also has to distinguish between his presentation n hers.

K...u gotta do something where its able to point out whats wrong with hers(if she does like "hiphop") but also stand up to hers if she surprises you. Keep ur discussion about underground hiphop, about how its thriving, n keeping it real, the differences between mainstream n underground, even underground n just normal hiphop ideas. You dont wanna get caught trying to explain underground hiphop as the same thing she does, because a lot of people wont understand the difference if she comes off n surprises u

maybe you could also try presenting before her, that could have its advantages and disadvantages though.

advantages= after your done, she will look like a fool getting up to talk about false ish.

disadvantages= peeps may like her presentation better because some peeps are not yet comfortable in accpeting the underground world of hiphop

Because its a COMM class we have to follow this stupid ouline of information. The thing I am havbing trouble with is the "attention grabber"

As for my outline I'm breakin it down like this:

1. The History of Hip-Hop
2. The Elements of Hip-Hop
3. Hip-Hop today.

yes we can use visual aids, but we are limited to 1 minute of visual aid.
Being the amazing video guy I am, I have that part pegged.

But I am forced to gather my info from: 1 Educational Article, 1 Site, 1 News Article, and one outside source (interview, book, movie)

I don't want any of my shit to cross hers, and yes I wanna go after her so I can pump the truth out right after she goes.

I tried to get out of her, what she is gonna do it about, and it sounds like the history of hip-hop as a music Genre, her main source (prolly her only source) is gonna be the book "Yes, yes ya'll"

So ya.
Thanks for the help so far.

I had this problem before in high school, I used a quote from the Lootpack in my attention grabber. It's a line from the song Frenz vs endz.

"Hey yo' its about sex, lies, money murder, jewels, cars clothes, hoes, hats, blunts and gats. These are the things when you think of raps"

I used that to get the attention of a reader and didn't get in trouble using those words because they are quoted from a rap group. Just make sure to do correct works cited.

The lootpack- Frenz vs. Endz

Use this qoute, and explain what is used in commercial hip-hop and underground hip-hop and start getting into the background.

By the way, Hot Monkey Love Cafe is opening up late this month again.

If you break to that noise that plays all day on the radio and TV, you are not a b.boy.
