i dont think it came form one specific place..if you think about it..theres so many diffrent styles..all around the world..im sure befor we were actually calling it "hip hop dancing" people were doing it..in some form..so to answer your question..it came form people being creative..not one specific place..how i look at it anyway

Bboying came from the bronx. Period. The similar dance styles going on in other parts of the world were entirely different dance styles...it wasn't a small difference in naming the dances...they were completely different.

no i am not talking about bboying (thats why i put the 'did it branch OFF of bboying?') But Hip-Hop dancing, the type of dance where it says on the flyers of advertisments for dance companys 'Learn Hip-hop, Swing, ect'. because if they were just talking about bboyin wouldnt the ad just say Breakdancing instead of hip-hop? hopefully this helped to clear things up (im horrible at trying to get what i am thinking about across to people). But i think Solo knew what i ment.

hip hop history - 10-03-2003, 05:08 PM

hip hop orignated in the Bronx, NY. it started when people started dancing on the ground, and called themselves BBoys, or "Break Boys." They called themselves this because they would wait around on the dance floor for the song's breakdown where there were no words, just a long period of music. So then the aspect of DJing came into play-the DJ would keep playing the breakdown over and over again and scratching and fading for transition, so the bboys could dance for longer than 45 seconds. Then MC's started adding lyrics to the beats, and then started making up new beats that you could break to and it lasted like that throughout the whole song. I don't know where Graffiti came from but it's def. a big part of hip hop.

Then the movie "Flashdance" came out, and there was like a 2 minute scene with The Rocksteady Crew breakin in an alley. **Side note** Rocksteady were the godfathers of breakin. Guys like Ken Swift, Frosty Freeze, Mr. Freeze (THE FIRST WHITE BREAKER!! WORD!) Crazy Legs, Mr. Wiggles, etc. But so when Flashdance went out all over the nation in theaters, then people all over the U.S. started breakin because that was the first time anyone saw breakdancing outside of New York.

There are also many other milestone things that happened in hip hop- The release of Wild Style, the first hip hop movie, then movies like Beat Street and Breakin. Then I think NYC Breakers did a pre show to the olympics and that's when it went international.

If possible, buy the movie "The Freshest Kids" It's a documentary of breakin, you can't find it in any video stores around where I live, but you can buy it off Amazon.com

aight peace
