Problems with Planche -
09-29-2003, 01:49 PM
I got problems with a planche. I was just practicing and I noticed that I bend my elbows . I tried to get the elbows straight but I kept coming down. I can only hold myself up if my arms are bent.

A very good way to practice Planches is to lower into them from a handstand. That works if you have nice solid handstands of course, but if you're training for Planches they shouldn't be much of a problem. It's easier to not bend your arms and you feel where you get to the limit angle. That will get lower with time, until you can get horizontal and hold it.
Try a ball planche first, you don't really need the handstand technique there because it's very easy, you could even get it on your first try... at least I did, lol. When you're comfortable with it you can move to open leg Planches with that handstand method, and once you got them you can either start gradually closing your legs or just starr training them close legged, cold.
The key is the handstand method, it does much more than just trying them from kneeling or other stuff.

check out that thread. its harder to balance with your arms straight but keep working on it you will get it. try going into it with your arms straight rather than going into it with bent arms and trying to straighten them. try going into it different ways like diving to the floor or from a pushup position. someways are easier than others.

I'm quite proud of my planche. i have the best planche in my city, and according to my friend, bboy loki, possibly the best in saskatchewan, canada. thats pretty intense. i can go into it from a handstand and up to it from a stabbed position. i must say tho, when you trying to learn it, dont try to go from a handstand down to it first. wait till you can planche a bit already. best tip i can think of, is when your starting to learn it, try pointing your fingers towards your feet more, like, behind you sort of. start in sort of a push up position with you fingers facing down and jump into a planche and just try to hold yourself up as long as you can. after a while, everyone ends up bending their elbows. also try to keep your legs straight but spread them apart as well. spreading disperses the weight better.
i can hold it pretty decent with straight arms but after long enough my arms tend to bend too. so your pretty close to it already. but hey, you gave me an idea, im going to try and time it
peace
And there he goes, off like a Jewish Foreskin

dood u can't friggin 1 handed planche ahah.. i seem ppl push up frum a planche position wit one hand but i dunt think any1 can hold it like dat.. the key to planches is bring ur chest up and ur legs low. lock ur shoulders kinda and balance is important too.. dunt go in frum a handstand hahaah.. unless u talking bout those kinda diagonal handstand thingys they dunt count..

Why not, I could do that anytime
It grows em up either... you should see mine... MY BALL PLANCHES I MEAN
And it IS possible to planche on one hand, just takes lots of strenght and some more balance.
And why should you not be able to do handstand-planche?? Lol, it's just a softer way to go into it.

Whatevey you guys call ball Planches, I can do them forever, its just, I know I got enough upperbody strength for it, but still, even with the fingers pointing towards my toes, I push forwards and upwards so that my hands are around the waist level, I think I need to work on my chest, so I can hold my body up. What muscle to you need to hold your body up?

For a small part I think it's about triceps, but WRISTS are what does the most work. They're what keep you from fallin on your nose, that's why I think it's best to point your hands forward, pointing them inwards or backwards makes it almost useless to me.

I think I'm getting it. I made up an exercise for it. You do the pushup position and have your hands where its supposed to be and you push forward and and a little higher off the ground. Now I try to hold it as long as I can.

Yah, that's one of the most common ways to go into it while learning. I still recommend the handstand lowering technique, but whatever... lol

The thing is that I'm not good at handstands at all. Other ways I exercise is doing it on the stairs. That works the best I think. And then I do it off a baby freeze. This helps a lot too. Thanks for the tip though. I'll try doing it off a handstand.
