hey define breakbeats - 09-07-2003, 12:29 AM

orite please dont move this to DJ section coz its more of a general discussion

well i have a question. what do you guys all define as breakbeats? what type of music

now the reason i ask this coz so many ppl use the term differently.

now i have heard breakbeats to be like trance/dnb but not so fast paced.. i dunno hard to explain but like ELECTRICAL music i guess

then others say its shit like dj hype, dj static, dj shadow (organ donor)...
and also is BS 2000/mixmaster mike- NY is good, a break beat?

FINALLY i hear people define breakbeats as music u can break(dance) to..

so what is the real definition of breakbeats?

This one time...this hot chick rings me up and says to me in a horny voice, ''Oh baby come over now, no ones home''.... So I went over to her house and no one was home..

A break beat, is a section of music (typically just a couple of bars) where only the drums are playing.

Breaks are defined as many things though.
Drum+Bass has probably the most valid claim to the title.
Then there's "new-school breaks" - kinda hard to define.

Bleargh!

Gimme a late 70's funk break any day!

A bboy without style, is like a broken pencil.

There's just no point.

"DEFINITION OF A BREAK BEAT: A BREAK BEAT (BASED ON A STYLE OF DRUMMING CALLED FUNK) IS THE DRUM SOLO ON A FUNK, SOUL, R N B, ROCK, JAZZ FUSION OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF SONG THAT FEATURES FUNK DRUMMERS. SOMETIMES THE BREAK IS ACCOMPANIED BY OTHER PERCUSSIONS LIKE CONGAS, TIMBALES, BONGOS, AS WELL AS A BASE GUITAR, SAX, AND SO FORTH. USUALLY YOU WILL FIND IT EITHER IN THE BEGINNING , OR IN THE MIDDLE OF A SONG. WHEN IT'S IN THE MIDDLE IT WILL USUALLY HAVE A GRADUAL BUILD UP OF SOME SORT, AND ALLOT OF SONGS WILL EVEN START THE BREAK OFF WITH A HORN HIT. A GOOD BREAK IS ONE THAT IS FUNKY AND WILL MAKE THE CROWD MOVE. AND CAN BE USED AS A BACK BEAT FOR MC'S (RAPPERS) TO RHYME TOO, OR BBOYS (HIP HOP DANCERS) TO GET DOWN TOO, OR JUST FOR PEOPLE TO PARTY TOO. WHAT YOUR GENERALLY LOOKING FOR IN LENGTH IS A BREAK ANY WHERE FROM AT LEAST 4 BARS TO 8, 16, 20, AND SO ON."

I think that was a good history lesson from where breaks were spawned. Right on the money too. Breakbeat is an unfortunate term. Strictly speaking, it could be lots of things. IT's like "alternative" music, you know? Basically, a break will usually have a kick on the 1 and 3 while most dance music will have a kick on 1,2,3,4. A lot of that stuff they call "new school breaks" is really just house in disguise. In electronic music, it will have a shuffle high hat, kind of like the sound a horse makes when it gallops. I think some artists that define breaks in electronic music are Sharaz, Infiniti, DJ Fixx, Rick West. These people have been laying it down for years.
