Starting A HipHop Club -
09-06-2003, 04:04 AM
What do y'all think? My basic idea is to provide a place for bboys/hiphop dancers to practise and organiz battles between them, to get graff artists together to share ideas and paint legals/canvass (teachers gotta be involved... ), to organize emcee battles and most importntly educate the population on the true hiphop culture - all within my new high school. Ive gotten support from 63 other students and as a gr 9 kid who knows nobody and am getting this all from 1 block where only 200 kids are at lunch on campas at any given time i think im doing pretty well... what do y'all think of this idea so far? Give me ur hon est opinion of starting sumthin like this plz... peace

eh? why u askin us? if u have 60some kids to support u, and u wanna do it, go for it. i'm sure theres a teacher out there who will sponsor u. most teacher will just sponsor u and then have nothing to do with the club. its just a name to put on the papers, really. the biggest club at my school of about 4000 kids was 100 members strong. 63 for a school w/ 200 kids...very good. find a room with easily removed tables and chairs so u can clear a dance area, or meet in the gym. graffers can go outside so the fumes dont destroy us all. u probably cant have everything going on at once, so have one element per meeting. or two. dj's can dj for the bboys, so those 2 can go together, and the mc's can do their thing while the graff goes on. that way theres not much noise clutter and junk.

^^^
this is a huge factor just cause you have 63 kids say their gonna do it doesnt mean more then 40 are gonna show up...
you could have everyone doin their stuff on the same days but you will have to tone it down a bit so everyone can be heard or seen...
Dj's could provide the beats for the Mc's and Bboys and the graf writers can sketch while they listenin...
usually only problem with this is too much cluttered so listen to ray ray more then me haha

Do it, be confident, don't back down.
If you break to that noise that plays all day on the radio and TV, you are not a b.boy.

bro, this sounds like a vision. Go for it, don't waste time asking us what you think, if you have support, it doesn't matter how many people are in, in fact a smaller number would be better to begin with. Organise away.

i wanna get a popping club started this winter and what i was planning on doing was putting on a preformance during lunch for the freshman(freshman stay at different building at my school). Then during my lunch at the main building. Lunch with 1/3 of the 10-12th graders ill go into the courtyard(area outside the cafeteria were people chill after they eat and start kickin it. All the while ill have flyers and be handin um out to the people that watch. You might wanna do some advertising. What elements do u rep? Do a lil somethin for each element u rep to show the masses what to expect and catch there attention.

Thnx for the ideas, u relly got sum new shyt in my head flowin... thats y i asked here, lol.
Hagios - Thnx for the comment, much appreciated. Glad to see im takin seriously by one of the ppl i respect most on this forum.
RayRay - I see ur point, but i ask to get advise on managing and advertising and opinions (like if its kinda selling out) to better construct my write-up to hand to the administration.
Philly - That was my plan in the 1st place. I got a small gym ive set my eyes on, but no turntable sets (yet!). The staff will only support the cause so far ya kno. Who knos, mabye so few will actually come regularly that a crew could be formed... of course that would also make me a crew whore... ive made like 3 but never followed thru... lol
Kicks - I rep bboying, graffiti, emceeing and beatboxing... i just not that good at the last 2 (not my main elements... i concentrate most of my time at bboying and graffiti, write rhymes out occasionally, battle a bit, and beatbox to keep myself from being bored while i walk.) To get those sigs I already did a bit of bboying and even got props from haters... pretty dope.
Dilivium - Neither have I, thats why im starting one. ]
Kicks - Ive only gotten like 12 ppl who s ay they wanna do it, every1 else just said their in supposrt of the idea, like they think it would be a positive thing for the school. Sorry if i was misleading in waht i said. But i kno if i advertsie they will come... simple enough...
Few things to add... 1) Im not making a sign up sheet except for battles... The idea is more of a hiphop drop in then a club so that u dont have to wake up at 6:30 every mornin jus to stay. 2) The main thing im worried about is preps destroyin it by making the rest of us look wack (dissin practising, dissin the "culture" theyve seen in Nelly music vids, etc.). So yah... 3) I dont kno if theyll give us turntables... so far ive got them to a boom box but our school is sooo poor right now... ill need to get it big b4 i can even suggest the idea.
See, y'alls comments are bein appreciated. One love

in order to create a club at my HS, all you had to do was send in a little application and have a teacher sign it. you had to say why ur club would benefit the community. hell, you could make a porn club and say it would help all the horny teenagers in ur school. that's how it went down at my HS. dunno about urs. if you need money to buy supplies, you have to fundraise. you also have to collect club dues, even tho the members might hate u for it for a little bit. but they'll love you when they see cans and tables. you guys can perform for the school and collect donations. you have to do as much as you can to raise money to keep the club going. there's no way ur gonna keep all those writers spraying with a low budget. with nobody ever hearing of a hiphop club?? i dunno where ur from, but most of the schools in our district had one. my school had one, but it was mainly for dancing. they did performances once in a while and collected some money for that. also, if you want to use other facilities like public gyms and stuff for performances, you're gonna get much greater feedback when u say ur from a school club, not just a crew from somehwere in the neighborhood. being part of a big organization like ur school district gives u much more power and access to facilites.

I think thats a pretty nice idea, but that you'd have to work pretty hard around the start for fundraising. Also you gotta make sure that people in your school are into that stuff, so the club will stay alive.
