Difference between cypher battles and regular battles - 09-05-2009, 03:50 AM

Well these two are so different, yet so alike.
I'd like to know your thoughts and opinions of these two.
I would say that in cypher battles, there comes across a more general idea of respect, as it's just you and your opponent battling, for nothing more than to show how hard you have worked to be at the level you are at. In the case of a regular battle, your goal is to beat the other person across from you. From this there seems to be a lot more pressure, and even a little bit of tension between you and your opponent. Also, when going against somebody in a battle, you more or less have what you are going to do weeks ahead before the battle, training for that day to come. On the other hand in a cypher battle, you use the sets that you already have, or even make new ones up on the spot.
I would like to know your opinions on the subject.
Do you prefer one over the other?
How you battle, or perceive a battle, in both areas.
Because I don't play to win the whole competition, I play to beat the guy across from me whether the cypher, or the battle floor.

i gotta disagree with your assessment of the cypher battles. SOMETIMES it's like that but often the tension level in the cypher battle can way outdo the tension in a set battle format. someone calls you out and your name is on the line... that's worth far more than a hundred dollar cash prize that's gonna be all spent up two days later.

So i'm sure people can agree a battle is a fight.

Now this is what i percieve, a regular battle is like a fucking UFC fight where theres set time and rounds and etc. So you have to stop when the round is over once the fight is over its over. Theres rules and limitations that make a "controlled fight".

Whereas a cypher battle is straight raw real fight, you aint stopping until one of you can't get up/move or gives up. Theres no one going "OH GUYS 2 ROUNDS NO MORE" its however you long you can go or want to go or need to go to rip that person apart. No limits, no rules, nothing but you and him/her/it going at each other.

If people dont agree with me, then disregard my post. Once in a while ill surf these forums if im injured or bored and if theres an interesting topic i will post my opinion or thoughts otherwise im out giving it 110% everyday.

I hate to lose, if i have to i'll do it with everything i've got

cypher battle's are raw, if it's settling beef they get fuckin so heated.

too me organized battles will never have the same energy as cypher battles.

What Backfire said. Watch a cypher battle and an organized battle, and I mean ones that aren't on youtube. You will notice the energy difference.

tbh ithink cypher battles can be more boring and stupid. it's basically "outlast your opponent," not "outdo your opponent." alien ness implies this himself: he says that he'll let you smoke him the first 10 rounds because he's gonna pace himself and outlast you.
so basically, imagine a marathon. except the point isnt to finish first, the point is to keep going at a certain pace. how stupid is that?

sets in cypher battles are usually a lot more boring than those in competition/jam/organized battles because everybody's so obsessed with pacing themselves that their sets never really make you go "wow." ive seen very few bboys throw out legitimate, entertaining rounds in cypher battles without repeating or burning out.

of course, people say cypher battles are more "raw," and i agree with that only in the sense that people usually use it to settle beef. but i still think that the sets themselves generally turn out to be pretty weak

"Don't make ur moves into a dance, make your dance into a bunch of moves" - My First Mentor

that's a shit quote. sorry, but i think that dance is the overall essence of what your moves are SUPPOSED to be. "make your dance into a bunch of moves" means that youre taking away from the combining factor of everything being a DANCE and breaking it down into individual moves. i think that's a misleading quote.

LOL i just noticed i put it backwards... it's supposed to be make your moves into a dance, hahaha that took way too long to notice.

ohh and about the cypher battles, when people settle beef and get mad enough, they fuckin go off and thats where some of the hypest sets come from.

cyphers kick the shit out of organised battles. I'd rather watch a cypher battle any day of the week.
