Two ways to learn - 07-07-2009, 09:55 PM

My friend and I were watching a trailer of someone after a year (who will remain unamed). At the time, I had been breaking for about 5-7 months. He said that the other guy had more moves, but I had mastered my moves more (my windmills were smoother, my footwork was cleaners, my form in general was better). We reasoned out that there were two ways to learn.
Take a period of a month. You can do two things:

1. Learn multiple moves. Learn them to a point where you can do them well.

2. Learn one or two moves. Perfect them.

I was just wondering, what do people like to do on bboy.org

mmm...im learning using way number 2, perfect my moves...
i think if you learn alot of moves, you're able to battle, but they might not look good...
but if you perfect your moves, you're going to have more chances to win...but it takes time, maybe a year or two, but its worth...

i've learned 6 step, i combine it with 5 steps just because it comes to me to do it, and i try to do them as smooth as possible, i also practice 2 step and 3 step, 3 step is a little bit...dull i think, i don't like it, so i barely practice it, but i spent my trainin hours doin most of them 2 step and zulu spin, and tryin to perfect them, do them as smooth as i can, and if i wanted to, 5 and 6 step, just for fun, and try to do them even better it's goin pretty good, but my toprock just .....

Don't think, just do it.

I think it's impractical to only practice one move. And in fact sometimes it takes longer if you only practice a single move- think about it, if you do a move over and over at some point there a chance you'll make the same mistakes over and over, and if you take a break from it, you might try it a little different and see that it's gotten easier.

No reason not to work on many moves and perfect them. Concentrating on something, sure, but not training just a single move.

Toprock and footwork are not synonyms for style.

Working on one move at a time is not the way to go. If you can't do that move over and over it really gets you down. Proper way to do it is 2-4 moves at a time. And I agree with what kamshaft said.

hmm.....different perspective.
Idk. I always thought that when you focus on one move, you figure out when you make mistakes......i did that with my windmills.

my way was...learn power>Perfect them>footwork>then everything else lol..

-What I did was needed to be done at that time..Whether it was right or wrong, that was what I felt should have been done, you can't change it by overlooking what should have or could have been done, it is done...
