Understanding style -
07-05-2009, 08:49 PM
These are just my thoughts on the foundation/footwork = style and power = no style mindset, i could be wrong, but this is what i think.
EVERYONE SINGLE BBOY HAS STYLE, The only difference is the appeal and uniqueness that it presents. Even powerheads have style, the main reason alot of bboys don't consider power as a style is probably because of the repetitiveness and lack of foundation that it presents. Also the damage of "breakdancing" inflicted by the media. Before bboying was mainstream you wouldn't have to worry about being pure power but now is little appeal for it within bboys. Most of the time there is a lack of foundation and freezes in power, but that doesn't mean foundation and freezes gives you style. Its just what people like. Everything from the way you walk, what your wearing, and even your haircut contributes to your style. It's apart of you, so you have to have it. You can't say a person doesn't have style. If someone busts out a sixstep to a baby freeze, you could say his style is basic and boring, but nevertheless its still his style. If you bite majorly bite other bboys, your style is intricated as biterish, still, a style. You could be sloppy, stiff, but its still your style. A great example is lilou, he has incredibley unique style, some people think hes dope, some people dislike him. How could people dislike such a skilled bboy? Answer: his style. The reason people relate foundation to style is probably because of how much people enforce all elements of bboying to, they frown upon you when you don't incorperate them. This is understandable to want to uphold the foundations of bboying, but in all seriousness whether there is foundation or not, there is always style. On another note, your style is also always changing, when you start using more moves, become faster, and become more cleaner, your style changes. The only difference is that now its more pleasing to the eye(or possibly less pleasing). Plenty of famous bboys (hong 10, physicx) have changed there style up over time. So to sum it all up, it doesn't matter what moves you do, how original you are, how fast or how clean because your style is who you are and you shouldn't let the people judging you take away from what your doing. If you wanna be a pure powerhead go ahead, its understandable how people favor different styles over others, just make sure that the style that you like best is the one you have now. I am not incorperating style with skill,i realize bboys are on different skill levels. Im just trying to get across that everyone has style, and the reason that people think some style are better are because of what they look for with themselves. Some people will like originality more, some people like power more, some people like hitting the beats, some people like loads of foundation, and some prefer extreme technicality. The result is that alot of those aspects will be in there own style. Whether it appeals to other people, or whether it includes the basics of bboying doesn't take away from the style. The least you can say is "its not very bboy style." These are my thoughts, feel free to post your own opinions. |

Nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance.
Talent will not; Nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; Unrewarded genius is almost legendary; Education will not; The world is full of educated derelicts |

For the millionth time. Style is not foundation, and power is not lack of style.

peoples style doesnt consist of what foundation or power they incorperate in their set ..but how the music effects them..the mood it brings..that sense of rawness or relaxation. thats what i believe is an element of style ..

of course your style can be incorperated within powermoves and almost anything, but when people are talking about style moves, which they sometimes refer to as shortly style, they are talking about foundations and freezes.
but IMO not everybody has a style, if they bite, don't listen to the music, or just think bboying isn't a dance but a bunch of moves...respectfully i don't think it's possible for their personal style to evolve. just my 2 cents XD |

People will go out into their bboy scenes and dance for the love of the dance. Enough with this arguement. OP does make a good point though.
