It takes time, you are confident at session probably because you know everyone and your environment. If your talking about jam battles, it's normal because your in an area where you know nobody.

listen to alot, and i mean alot of music so you get comfortable and familiar with most beats. that way, you know how the music goes and how to hit the beat which helps. and you dont have to go out first, remember that. you have a chance to think about it

It's completely normal to feel like this, even when you know the people. The only way your going to get good at something is if you do it, so keep battling, keep getting smoked and learn. If you don't do it, you're only gonna lose more confidence. I still have this problem except with people I do not know or see often.

Edit: Drill your moves, make sets and do them hundreds of times, that's how you nail them in battles. You have to have it in your head, not even think. I once did a 10 round battle with a friend and in like round 4-7 I was trying to think of more moves to come up with for the upcoming rounds but it was very hard to think it since I'm so into it.

Try using this analogy -The hamster and the cage vs the hamster and the hamster ball:

You represent the hamster, and the cage represents your mind, your mood, your arsenal of moves etc etc. This cage has boundaries, which means you have boundaries. Anything outside this boundary means that you are not comfortable with or don't like (this could be battles, cyphers etc). The hamster wants to get out of the cage at some point in its life but it had to master the cage before it gets out (this means mastering your mood, your foundation and your overall attitude towards battling/b-boying). You do not want to be in a cage, and wait for a long time before you get out of the cage and start experiencing the real raw stuff.

The hamster in the ball is different. The ball represents your zone...and your zone only. What is in the hamster ball stays inside and nothing can get in or out unless you let it. In a battle you want to be in your own state of mind, this means not trying to impress someone or feeling like ur going to be embarrassed. Being inside the hamster ball and dancing like this means nothing is going to affect you...it will be you believing in yourself that will take you there!!

Summary: If you are battling do not be in a cage, but be in a hamster ball - your own little protective shell that will go wherever you go. If it is your friends they may be living in cages...but you my friend, you live in a ball

Enjoy
