what wins battles? especially beginners battles? -
05-18-2009, 12:36 AM
what wins battles, and i'm not talking about professional battles. i'm talking about beginner battles. i might go to a crew tryout event next month where a lot of noob-beginner bboys come, and they battle each other the best 5 make it to the crew. it says winner with the most smoke wins. from ur experiences, i want to know what judges really look for in a battle? and what really wins battles? is it style? creativity? power? cuz i'm gonna feel like shit if i battle some kid that i thought was beginner like me but he ends up doing flares and windmills and all that crazy shit, and all i end up doing is basic footwork and a freeze. that won't get me nowhere, and i'm worried

if your foundation is good you dont even need to bother with powermoves. but if you only do footwork and a freeze...
make sure your set doesnt look like this : sloppy 6step > crash > baby freeze > chair freeze you should have a big selection of footwork moves and toprocks^^ and then add your own cool style xD ...so IMO foundation and style wins beginner battles |

If ya don't got fancy powermoves, clean up whatever moves you have. This is also where attitude can make up for your skills a little. Judges will have personal preferences, but clean execution and flava are always good things to have.

you dont really need to have powermoves..dont really need to rush it..cuz power moves really takes time before you get it or atleast clean it up...
just make sure your foundations is strong..includes foundational moves, knowledge, philosophy, battle strategies etc..and remember in a battle or cypher u dont practice there. all the moves you do are atleast 98% clean and is no need for practice...u dont do shit that you're not sure cuz that could definitely make ur set or freestyle wack... this is what im workin on too.cuz i might battle more experienced bboys than me by the mid of june..but i dont really care how experienced they are..aslong as i know i got foundations and mad knowledge...and damn confidence...and dont really care too much about winning...concentrate more on showing who i am...and what im capable of ..and how im gon burn em ! haha |

There is no set critique guys, seriously. It all comes down to what the judges preferences are. YET, it is STILL only their opinion.

it's not about the moves you know, it's how you do them. polish up your tops, drops and footwork and have attitude when you dance, and you'll be fine. remember, this is a dance, and 'beginners' that can do flares and windmills probably won't have good clean foundation (if they've got any).

Not everyone has style. You could do your best shit, but if that isn't what the judge is into, he will vote for the other bboy. It comes down to watch the judges like to see.

yep, it's not too hard. if I see a battle with a power head against someone with a strong foundation and a good sense of rythym and music... the power head will get smoked. no questions asked
Everything was prety much stated.. but also, one thing that'll help you win battles is.. HIT..BEATS. Not just the normal snare beats, but i'm talking about the beats you wouldnt even expect to hear. One good beat killing song I can think of is "Killing in the Name Of" or even "Liquid liquid cavern." haha i'm going into too much detail here, but study your music. listen to everything and make sure you know it. that way, you know the song from heart, and can hit every beat. even if it looks goofy =] btw, it'll increase your confidence a million fold if you increase your knowledge on music |

I heard MPoe and a few other people say this at a jam recently
He said to just be yourself and ignore what your opponent's doing. Don't try to beat him/her at their own game. That's like a Christian writing a book on Buddhism. Just be you and be the best you can be on the floor and express yourself ![]() |
