Planning,organizing, a jam.need your help. - 05-07-2009, 01:56 PM

Im planning to organize and setup a weekly Bboy Jam here in the philippines.because the community here is getting big..but we only get to see each when there is a big battle..unlike in other places like there in the states and korea..theres usually like a weekly or maybe daily bboy jam..thats why its growin fast, educative, and damn good

So i NEED Your Advice, opinions knowledge on what to do,what usually happens in a jam, what to avoid etc?

well first im gon say whats on my mind..since me and my friends are gon be sponsorin the venue first..and its gon be held at a studio first..and then maybe we could train there, talk about the community..wats happenin, who's got beef with this, that crew etc..just a cypher, or you could call out somebody,or have exhibition battles..its like an informal thing only..

how bout can u say to me .wat a jam really feels like, wat really happens, wats its order...since im the first one who's gon do a jam like this here in the philippines..i need yo advices..tnx yo..

you need a decent sized prize like for a 1v1 or 2v2 400-500 dollars is the general going rate. if you put up 700 then that would push away younger kids who are just starting to battle, if you put up 1000 people will generally be too affraid to battle thinking some really ill people will go in (again if theyre new or not as good as alot of people, no one likes going to a jam to get roasted 24/7 they like to think they have a chance at winning atleast a battle.

get a dope dj this is most important i'd say, with a wack dj your jam will be wack, with a dope dj it will be dope.

get 3 good judges that are decently known in your scene, talk to them tell them whatsup see what you need to do to get them there.

then promote promote promote. i like to talk to vendors like redbull or gatoraid to give out product, i feel it gives something to everyone, even if you arent competeing you still get something worthwhile that might otherwise be too exepensive. idk what you can get in the phillipeans but whatever helps helps adding something extra i mean. for my next jam im haven redbull there with a guy or two that paints shirts shoes pants, etc ya dig? its something you dont see often its something that they can take home with them and so on and so forth. but for your first jam keep it simple

dope dj-1
dope emcee-1.5
decent prize-2
good judges-3 (try to get people who are impartial to who wins or loses) note- good to have each judge be apart of a diffrent crew and a backup judge. just to make sure no one is favoring crews. say im on beatstreet crew, and crew beatstreet is up, you would replace that judge with the 4th judge for that battle.
and generally the other stuff makes a good jam

place- ive noticed the past couple jams ive done is that where you have it does make a diffrence, i had it at a dance club once it was alright but more people wanted to drink then battle at that point, another time i had in a gymnasium where there was open gym and people just wanted to play basketball. and the last jam i had i had in another gymnasium where we lifted the balls out of the room and the nets and everything and made it so the only thing to do was be apart of the breaking so there was more energy. so if youve got a good feeling about a place to throw it then stick with it, if you go in someplace and aren't feeling the atmosphere or cant see it going on there then dont.

essentially live by this

build it and they will come-if you tell people about it and spread the word people will show up

snoopy---who cares as long as the girl starts rubbing her butt all over u later at night its all good

desi---- I didn't but that's only cause on my first time she cried and it was a bit of a disaster. GG drunk sex.

Woah!! - 05-07-2009, 03:43 PM

For now, i dont think i can do that kind of jam..since were just starting...

For now im only thinking of like..just a weekly cypher or open floor for bboys where and when we could also talk about issues, plans, bigger events etc...because thats what we lack here..we only meet when there's a big event..unlike in the states or even in korea where usually there's always a cypher or jam going on.. And my purpose for this is to bring or point out the real essence of the bboying culture,to keep the art and not just letting other people specially the new generations that bboying is only about Battle Of The Year,BC one,etc...

I Just Want To Promote

-Peace,Love Unity in the community here (Crews,Individuals,Begginers,Pioneers, etc)

-Proper Education and Knowledge (Discussions,Plans,HoWhy,)

-bringin all the hate and shitalking in the internet on the floor,in the cypher,in the battle.

-Battling is different from Cypher and Cypher Battles

To :

-Help the Community grow in a right way and with better understanding

-let the others know that Bboys or Dancers are not 2nd Rate Dancers and should not be discriminated and disrespected

-let them know that its not just about being on commercials, gettin Cash Prizes, fame etc..

and to avoid/erase more of the negative things that usually happens in our bboying community

Though wat you said are all good ..but i wanna do that maybe when cats here here already have the proper Knowledge, education, approach in bboying...

and another thing is dont have "sources" for these

DJ - usually still rely on mp3s,mixes, and downloads from other djs from the internet.. Cuz DJs here are not yet educated or used to playing/mixin breakbeats..

Dope Emcee - Yeah i this one we got for sure

Decent Prize - Not Yet .If we would rely on sponsors it'll take time becuz bboying here is not yet that known unlike in korea or other countries that they're getting support because something is really going on and that its like their mainstream already

Good Judges: Yeah this is easy.only to us or to some.. because some doesnt really know how to accept the decisions, and doesnt respect judges decision so wat happens is that there is always lot of hatin, rumors and some take it as a personal thing..so i think I/we will have to educate the community about this first.. even if there will be 10 judges,im tellin you, folks are still arguing about the decisions. thats how ignorant narrow thinking some peeps here..haha

so yeah the Jam that i would like to do first is for the community's good, like it will also be a live forum and discussion moment for bboys...to let em feel and know how it should be ..cuz honestly we are still Whack as a whole !!

That's pretty much what a jam is. Anyways, you should have an exhibition battle with people who have been in the scene or are coming up. You should have a few people running the jam. The orders can just be session for an hour+, if you're going to have different divisions for battles, make the internewbie or the crew battles first. Put breaks in between semi and finals unless there are too many crews. You can always do Top 8 or 16.

someone should make a sticky in even forums on how to start up a jam like this. it'll help a lot of people like gibo and myself who want to start one but don't know how.

well if u dont know how.... you should probably check out more jams before you try to host one... the only exception would be something like this, where jams are very rare in the place that the host is trying to create one

fishstix-theyre all over, you just need to find the people who are throwing them

OP- the way it sounds to me is more like an elements of hiphop- its basically history of the four elements of hiphop and the transition on how things came to be the way they are now, often they have emcee and bboy battles at these. its a cool thing to watch and get down but you need a dj weither its you or you train someone how to dj. someone has to be an up and comer, do some research theres gotta be atleast a couple bboy djs there. and you might be better off opening up a school under your sponsors. put up a 25-50 dollars cash prize for winners. you have two events thats 100 bucks. you'll be likely to get atleast 10 people there if not just your friends and you'll do fine money wise.

lol gibo dont sweat it pare i dont think everyone really understands what youre trying to do..

just for the record... there have been jams in the pi... for example all the way live was a big jam just held over there.... especially since youre in metro manila..

if you build it they will come... my advice for what youre trying to do is to just do it...go out and get the best dj you can find that will come and hang out and play for free and maybe ask people for like an optional 1 dollar donation...

there are a few biweekly spots i know of here in chicago that do this

also.. from experience, i think it will be more social issues thatll get you in trouble.. so try and keep everyone respectful... and your crew has to play a good host.. just try to have fun and network

i'm pretty sure breaking the law isn't happening anymore. i've even talked to the people at UW Madison and at the venue from last year, no one has heard anything. the guy who got it started graduated.

lol i'm in southeast or northeast wi. never heard of anything in rockford or milwaukee, but i'll have to look into it. chicago and minneapolis are 3-6hour drives and i don't have a car

Yep I know there big jams here in PI and im always present cuz here..you cannot miss any jams because it happens so rare..like average is every 2 months..and its always been a big jam and usually sponsored or organized by people from other countries...so thats why planning it weekly..just to help in our community..cuz if i aint gon start it noone else gon do or think of it..

yeah there are weekly jams there in chicago..but here in philippines nada..thats wat im trying to work on..

yeah thats the number one reason why im doin this. respect with each and every crews here ..cuz there are lots of issues and beef goin here which me and some of my homies dont like and are not into..if somethings goin on..bring it on the floor...and if we dont respect each other like (YOUTUBE WARS)..there'll be no unity..without unity there's no chance that the breaking scene here can catch up or go further than what other bboys do in their own land..like new york, california.Korea etc.. you know

and regarding the host ..thats not a problem. our friend is a bboy and also a host ..and i know already alil bit bout events cuz im really into doin those kinds but just wanna know more bout bboying jams..regarding that, me my friends even did a good battle here in PI..though its not like the jam that im pertaining to do.. check it out.. www.thebreakism.multiply.com
or look up more of this video on youtube

as you can see there's a dj there..but not yet used to breaks and he's first time to do in a battle. so we still consider using downloaded mixes or digital mixes that we made..

well anyway thanks .looking forward to more of your opinions and from others aswell..
