Getting Wood Flooring.... - 02-16-2009, 08:49 PM

Okay, so recently I've been practicing in my basement on the tiled floor that we have as a dance floor (wasn't put in by parents for bboying purposes, it was just to show off and look cool). The squares are small and have huge gaps in between each tile that really hurt while I practice on it.

For now, I've been practicing on carpet with cardboard, or going to the dance studio. I can go to the studio whenever I want, but having a practice spot at home is nice because then I don't have to make the drive out to the studio all the time.

Here's my plan, so let me know what you think I should do...

I plan on purchasing a smooth polished hardwood flooring (the size of the little dance floor we have in the basement) and getting it installed over the tiles.

Here lies the problem...

A lot of people have been telling me that I might need to strip the tiling and install the floor, but I was thinking that if I just get it installed over the tiles, it wouldn't require me to go through the process of striping all the tiles and then installing the wood.

Also, I need some places I can purchase smooth wood flooring. Don't just tell me hardware stores because I already know about those.

My mom suggested shopping online for flooring used by hotels during parties, but I think that would be mad expensive.

I'm trying to find the cheapest possible way, because we really don't want to pay someone to strip the tiles and install the new flooring if there's an alternate way around it.

Thanks

have you 1st tried searching all possibilities and then comparing their prices and difficulty? you wnt know until you actually look @ the prices nd quality of material etc. the hotel flooring doesnt sound too bad either.

I'm almost completely sure you're going to have to rip up the tile floor. I'm pretty sure you could do that yourself with a little research so that might not even cost more. For the cheapest price you should probably start looking for places that wholesale flooring or something of the sort because they'll give you way better prices than hardware stores.

Well, you can first buy the wood flooring of the specific size measuring your practice space. Place it on top of the tile flooring, then see if the wood flooring is uneven. If it is uneven, then yeah, you might have to remove the tile flooring which is a difficult task.

Cus my parents don't want the basement looking like crap and unprofessional. And the last time I taped cardboard down to carpet, it left tape marks all over the carpet , and they're planning on making the basement look nice, so they want a job well done.

Lol, unfortunately the floor isn't big enough to throw jams, and its pretty close to a wall too which sucks, haha.

I'm really considering that snap-lock flooring idea though, are they pretty smooth, cus last time I danced on one at a wedding reception, they seemed a bit rough.
