bboying helps me respect old skool more -
02-11-2009, 10:16 PM
is it normal for me to listen to more old skool hip hop now than new skool hip hop? ever since becoming a bboy ive been finding more and more old skool songs to break to like young mc, big daddy kane, etc. my sense of respect for the old skool rappers and mc's has greatly increased. i really dont listen to too much hip hop of the present now bc all of its so wack to me. they talk about the same thing over and over again and really no message at all. dont get me wrong i still listen to "the game" and "young jeezy" and "t.i." but other than them there isnt too many more hip hop ppl. i listen to. everthing seems so dumbed down. so i usually find myself listening to more old skool now and have alot more respect for them. any1 else feel the same?

pfft... theres just as much talent today..you just gotta do a little searching
hip hop is just as good now as back in the day. EDIT: and if the best your listening to is T.I , The Game and Young Jeezy...no wonder you don't like hip hop as much today. |

Mainstream isnt crap, its just not what you guys listen to. Its pretty much its own musical genre at this point. Even many of the rappers people consider underground have become hype. Doom, Immortal Technique, Aesop, Atmosphere, etc. Its become trendy to be underground.
And for the record, rappers and emcees are the same thing. |

I dunno I think most oldschool rappers are pretty crappy, when I say oldschool I mean before run dmc and maybe run dmc themselves. All they do is yell over the same old beat and the somehow manage to rhyme a few words, either that or they have the most lame rhyme scheme ever, that even a 7 year old can write their songs. Though this doesnt mean I don't respect them for setting the foundation of the new school rappers, because without them there wouldn't be any rap music at all.
so good.. |

^ word, i got whatchu mean... but i disagree. i dont think old school was "pretty crappy" lmfao. its just that hip hop as a culture has evolved and become more complex. i mean, for its time it was amazing. That's like saying the first lightbulb was pretty crappy because it wasn't as bright or energy efficient as lightbulbs today. Wow i make weird-ass analogies LOL.
anywyas u sed u still respect the old school, so thats good. But i mean, they weren't crappy. It's evolution of the style. and you have to remember, firstly rap was just talkin over the mic to a crowd really, so simple showts and chants were the most effective and common. Then as it started progressing into the style that we have today (complex imagery and lines w/ more intelligent vocab) it went through a sort of chant-like stage that was still simple enough to really follow along with.. im just speculating. i could be completely wrong on the evolution of rap. I didn't study it. But those are my thoughts on this subject. |
