How to Host a Jam -
02-11-2009, 06:29 PM
I'm planning to host a Jam.
And I need some help figuring out what I need to make it successful instead of a wack Jam. Anyone with experience is greatly appreciated. |

well im assuming that you are planning to hold your own event. what you will need is MONEY. money to pay the dj, pay for the venue, pay the judges, pay for the prize money if there is any, and pay for advertising (fliers etc.). you may try to rely on the door money to pay for all of this, but the disadvantage is that there might not be as many people showing up than you first anticipated. thus money will have to come from your own pocket. try to get sponsorships from companies or family that will donate money, or clothes to help ease the weight on your wallet. if your scene is large, 3v3 battle format rakes in the most money. venue is important, because it must be accessible to the bboys and to your audience. commitment from various crews so that you will have competitors for sure. thats all i can think of right now...im actually throwing my 2nd jam next month so ya im still learning myself but my first jam was a success and made some money. if you have questions feel free to reply here or pm me

$300
my door price was $10 per person. the rest of the 2000 something went to all the things ive mentioned. luckily i got my venue for free...but they were going to charge about 300-400 but they saw how successful my event was and waved the venue charge...so i would have either broke even or been down a couple hundred which would have to come out of my own pocket |

i've actually thought of setting up a jam, but what are the various types of battles/competitions you could set up?
i know there's 3v3, 1v1 (or any other number), crew battles, style or power battles, specific style battles (ie popping, locking, breaking...), all style battles, footwork, toprock. Are there any others? I've heard of shark tank and 7 to smoke, what are those? |

How much money do you expect I should pay the DJ and the judges individually?
Also, let's say that money isn't my biggest concern. Rather the planning of the event and having it go smoothly. |

1) venue
2)dj 3)Prizes 4)judges (want to make sure you have a fair battle) 5)redbull 6) breakers 7) popping/locking comp 8) hiphop battles (good for most jams because its easy money and almost every town has 40 studios) 9) extra money makers-shirts,dvds,music other things to keep in mind -date,drinks aside from redbull (a case of waters is generally awesome, either for free (preferably) or for like 50 cents to a dollar -having a clean floor invesst in a swiffer sweeper -try to get sponsors to offset the price of the jam i tried looking for a generic "what you get from being a sponsor" but i couldnt really think of anything aside from telling people to go buy this product and letting a couple people in from their store. -i'd recommend going to a couple of clubs in the area and hang out at their sessions for a week or two, bring flyers, forge relationships. it will help alot with making sure you have breakers there. -decide what type of jam-1v1 2v2 3v3 crew, extras including 7tosmoke bonnie and clyde, bgirl battles |

you could also try to be swift and work out a crew sponsorship so they can pay you to go to battles as well as gas for your vehicle, redbull etc (with some of the sponsors i mean)

i think that before you really throw a jam you gotta get your name out first. think about it - how many successful jams are hosted by no-names in your area? people will come to your jam - IF THEY KNOW YOU.

i've paid my dj 300...my next dj i'll pay him 350 because of his popularity etc. judges...depending on how experienced they are..and what your budget is...between $50-$75....planning will deal with money...how much you have..how much you plan to make, etc. as for being known....not too important. just as long as people see that theres a battle, good prize money, close to home, and fair entrance fee, people will come. make sure battles run on time and theres breaks inbetween for people to cypher and for judges to tally votes..usually 5-10 mins inbetween tournament sections (prelims, top 16, quarter finals, semi finals, finals) WATER not redbull or energy drinks..unless you're sponsored. |

apparently for redbull stuff theres one or two reps that control a huge part of the distribution of the redbull to events like this. the hard part is finding them, you talk tothem and hope for the best. tell them you havea venue and you would like them to help out with a dj and redbull to hand out. tell them how many people are perspected to come. make sure your professional, then spam the fuck out of every site with your flyer and post stuff everywhere. even if you dont get a huge turnout of people (16 people) you should aim for high spectator rate. if you get high spectators then you can get enough money for prizes and etc. make sure you have your friends spam the fuck out of the flyer to everyone too. the more people that know the more people will show up.
